1987 S4 148K on the clock fully sorted lost its battle on 29 Jun 2016. I have pics & video on my iPhone but can't figure out how to upload them.
Had to have been a fuel leak in the engine bay. Started in driveway. Sitting ildleing about to be driven 5 hrs to Knoxville & whoosh! Flames from underneath car and under the hood. Shut it off, put it in gear and let it roll into the street away from my house & Beamer. FIre dept. arrived in about 12 mins. They doused it with large amounts of water & it started again. Had to pry open hood & hack (ax) the hood latch to get it open. More water. Hole burned through drivers fender.
Inside the car you can't tell anything happened. Waiting on adjuster to call. What would b fair value? No skill set in this dept.

I feel your pain bud, I've been in your shoes before. I am in Canada so my insurance experiences probably don't apply, but I just wanted to show you my support. I'm glad that you got out unscathed.

I had the same thing happen. Mine was a hot restart in my driveway, fuel injector popped out of the rail and sprayed the engine compartment. I reacted quickly with the garden hose and saved mine. I feel for you was a very scary experience. I hope you get a fair settlement, did you have an agreed value with your insurance company?

Really sorry to hear of your disaster. I can imagine how you're feeling. I know that the sentiment that 'what's the most important thing is that no one was hurt', isn't all that comforting right now, but things could always have been worse, and you'll get plenty of support from everyone here in digging your way out of this hole of despair.
You could upload your photos and video to a photosharing website, and then share the links here. Those with IPhones might have more specific advice.
I wish you the best. Dave

Sorry to hear about this. Can you upload files to your desktop ? If so, follow directions below courtesy of a RL search. T
To upload a file from your computer, click the 'Browse' button and locate the file. To upload a file from another URL, enter the full URL for the file in the second box on this page. Once you have completed one of the boxes, click 'Upload'.
Once the upload is completed the file name will appear below the input boxes in this window. You can then close the window to return to the new post screen.
What files types can I use? How large can attachments be?
In the attachment window you will find a list of the allowed file types and their maximum sizes. Files that are larger than these sizes will be rejected. There may also be an overall quota limit to the number of attachments you can post to the board.
How do I add an image to a post?
If you have uploaded an image as an attachment, you can click the arrow next to the 'Attachment Icon' and select it from the list. This will be inserted into your post and can be located where you want it displayed.
To include an image that is not uploaded as an attachment and is located on another website, you can do so by copying the full URL to the image, (not the page on which the image is located), and either pressing the 'Insert Image' icon or by typing after it, ensuring that you do not have any spaces before or after the URL of the image. You can insert pictures from your albums (?) in this way too.

Really sorry to hear about the fire, but glad you are OK.
Do you have detailed pics from before the fire? Those will help establish a value. This will be an arm-wrestling contest with the insurance company looking for comparable cars: You open with Derek Bell's ClubSport, they open with some junker off Craigslist. Check NADA valuations, Hagerty, and search recent completed sales.
It would be really useful for folks here to know something about the possible cause. What was the state of the fuel lines? Original or new, recently inspected or unknown, replaced with ??
This is also a good time for all of us to think about fire protection. Fires are not unique to 928s, I have clear memories of leaking fuel lines in my ex-GF's 914, with gasoline sizzling on the manifolds. Still gives me the chills.
I've had three occasions to discharge a fire extinguisher in anger: The first was a multi-car crash long ago (early 70's), four cars fully involved and completely hopeless. The second was a decade later, neighbor's hedge (careless cigarette) with a 2.5# dry-chemical and worked great. The third was just a few weeks ago, coming home from Sharks in the Park and a Chevy Suburban had pulled off with a fire. I grabbed the 2.5# HalGuard from the GT and got the fire out, but it re-ignited from underneath and behind the engine, something down there was super-hot. The car was lost, people OK.
Bottom line: Fires are a bitch, and time is the enemy. Getting there quick with anything, however small, is better than late. Change the fuel lines, and carry an extinguisher.

^^ Always carry a chemical extinguisher that is capable of putting out a cat fire, which is probably what burned up that suburban.
I carry 2 in my car. It's always good to be too prepared for the worst when the worst happens. Now I'm tempted to run a halon system in the car.
It really sucks to hear of your loss but it looks mostly contained to the drivers side of the car and didn't make it past the firewall. The car can probably be saved, just take a few days to deal with insurance and where you want to go with this next.

The silver lining is that you are completely unharmed (at least physically). Any car can be restored with sufficient time and money. Human limbs and organs? Not so much.
