Default Climate Control / Dash Defrost

Hey everyone,
Well, it was raining nicely here today and my windows fogged up a little. One thing I noticed is that when I try to turn the fan on, it doesn't.
It seems that my rear defrost is fine but there's like minimal air if at all blowing out of the vents and dash vents. Could it be a bad vacuum line, climate control head or fuse etc?
What would be some things I can check before having to take this in and looked at? I'm thinking there will be more rainy days in the next while so kinda wanna be able to see out of my car when driving. 84 928S btw.

928noob,
I do not understand 100% what you mean - Are the fan not running or did you not get enough air to the front window?
But anyway, the 928 is not the best car in rainy weather, even from new they have this tendency - Use the two to the right positions for your handle, and it gets better.
Another important thing with our old cars is, be sure that's not leaking, the rear side windows have a tendency to leak, and that can be very difficult to detect, but if these are leaking you will always have fogged windows
Also the rear hatch can leak but normally that's easy to see.

A clearer description and more details would have helped, but you did give the model year...

The blower on the '84 uses Fuse 17 to feed both Relay XXI (normal blower) and Relay XXII (defrost).

If the blower runs on everything except defrost, the problem is probably Relay XXII.

If the blower runs on defrost, but not at all on other positions, the problem is probably Relay XXI.

If the blower runs on defrost, and on high speed only in other positions, the problem is probably in the resistor pack under the hood.

If the blower doesn't run at all, the problem is probably Fuse 17 or its connectors, or the blower motor or its connectors.

Hmm, well I checked the fuse panel which was the first thing I tried. It looks like there isn't a fuse in #17 which is kinda odd. Maybe something left out by the PO. However, when i tried to put a 25a fuse in, i saw some light sparks. Didn't want to chance it but is this normal? Would I have to disconnect the battery to change fuses (and if so, anyone with detail instructions on how to do it safely?) I'm not that familiar with electrical so wouldn't want to get a shock.
I guess on the topic of battery, what is a suggested brand and type of battery? I heard Group 49 for an 84 928S... 800+ CCA?

Hmm, tried it again today. I changed a fuse on another section and there was no sparks... I am wondering if there's a problem with the #17 since when I try to put the 25a fuse in, there's sparks. I don't want to blow anything out etc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated :|

Given that fuse 17 was missing, it is probably a safe assumption that there is "something" wrong with that circuit. The sparks on fuse installation is neither normal nor desirable. Disconnecting the battery for the fuse install is not going to make any difference...just delays the fireworks until you reconnect it.

There is obviously a short somewhere in the circuit downstream of the fuse. You really need to have the wiring diagram to track this one down (good luck deciphering the '84 ones...I have not graduated to these yet and WallyP has noted on many occasions that they are...challenging), but you could tray a few simple things.

Assuming the rear defroster works, the problem is in the blower circuit. Swap out the relay XXI with a known good unit, then see if there is a short on fuse 17 (with a test meter, test light or the good old insert-a-fuse method). If the blower now works, the problem is in the blower relay you have swapped out.

If this is not the problem, you will need to trace down the wiring downstream of the relay(s). Get the wiring diagrams, grab your favorite test instrument and have at it! Guess a good place to start would be the blower motor itself...could simply be burnt out and shorted...
