Default 928 mechenics

No I'm not looking for a mechenic.

However, has anyone ever noticed that any shade tree mechenic that ever claims to have any ability always claims to be an expert on the 928.

I lost an alt. belt a while back. (my fault, I knew it was cracked, but hadn't gotten around to it.) A freindly enough fellow droped by and helped me out with getting to an auto parts store. I probably could have made it, as the battery was freash, but why take the chance right?

Anyways, he basicly told me up and down how great he was, and how much he knew about "Porssssesss" and just engines in general. When I poped the hood, at first he couldn't figure out what the cam covers where, and then he stated "damn that engines wide." Clearly he knew nothing about the 928.

Hum, what is it with the car that makes wrenchs tell such tails?

I think it is because the engine is in the front and pumps water for cooling.

In theory, outside of being OHC, it operates like a V8 in a Camaro, Corvette or Caprice Classic.

Next time, ask him to check the transmission fluid and see how long it takes him to locate the txmission. hahahahahaha

I was an auto mechanic and have had similar stories happen.

1. My A/C belt dropped off. While in some small town the local "mechanic" stated he could put it back on when I told him this particular Porsche had a water-cooled V8. Should have seen his eyes bug-out and mouth drop when the hood opened. After a minute of staring, he asked what kind of engine it was. I couldn't't help myself, so I repeated, "standard V8 engine...(long pause)...1979 Porsche". He shook his head... I wound up doing the work on his lift at the shop while he watched. Paid for the belt only, no labor charges. By the way, the sign out front even listed engine rebuilds...rebuilding what? Lawn mowers? I didn't see one engine stand or hoist in the place.

2. The other is when my clutch went out in the middle of no where. The shop of two mechanics got to work at 4:30 PM pulling the clutch. I got stuck in a hotel overnight. Called 928INTL and had a new clutch kit overnighted. UPS delivered at 9:00 AM next day to my hotel! When I arrived at the shop, the clutch pack was still in the car. With my directions and help, the clutch shaft got dropped (they had never seen that before) and the new clutch put in. Good thing I was thinking ahead and ordered a ball pivot for the clutch. That was what broke...the factory original after 120+ K/miles. Got the clutch adjusted...but the suppose-to-be EXOTIC mechanics (claimed they have worked on Porsche's and a Ferrari) were just amazed at how easy it all was and the design. What a joke! Took them almost ten minutes to figure out where the clutch adjustment rod was! (I sat back and let them make fools of themselves. The free floor show was worth it). Then, they couldn't find the labor costs in their books, so they used a 944 listing. Labor - $180. It should have been twice that...but hey! Who am I to argue!? I don't think they could read either!

In highschool I was a gearhead/shadetree. I remember the 1st time I saw a 928 engine. 85s were brand new. Oh how awsome. Everything you wanted to do to your chevy but already done and in a beautiful car to. And handles like a dream at 140. I look at myself now as a shadetree that had to grow up. But I'm still the same guy.
