Default Shipping an engine

I have a complete engine that I need to move and want to build a crate for it.

Anyone have any tips, pics, lessons learned, etc.?

Whatever you decide to construct I'd start with a strong pallet as a base.

That's what I would do. Strap it to a pallet and wrap it in plastic wrap.

You just put the engine (oil pan) directly on the pallet ?

Suggestions:

Start with a good strong pallet. Screw a sheet of plywood to the top to make a solid deck.

Screw 4x4s (maybe a foot long) to the plywood to make a place for the MMs to go (you may have to add a 2x4 to the top to get the right height). Not entirely sure how to get the MMs secured to the 4x4. If you can't secure the MMs, strap the engine down.

Make a braced "L" out of plywood. Drill holes to match the bellhousing bolts. Bolt the "L" to the back of the motor and screw it to the deck.

The general idea is to support the motor the same way it's supported in the car.

Then either wrap it in plastic, add a shipping blanket or two, or just build walls and a roof (a crate) around it.

Never done it myself, but I've seen how motors are shipped to a shop.

This is essentially how 928Intl shipped a motor to me, from CA to NC. Strapped down and wrapped. No problem at all.

Also, Home Depot sells some very large zip ties, about 3' long, for AC ducts that are very strong. I have used these, several on each side of the engine, to zip tie the engine to the palet using the exhaust manifolds as tie down points. Works great and it's cheap.

Did you sell it or you're moving it to your new garage?

Just curious.
