ANDY: We're always kind of concerned about sodium when it turns up in engines we haven't seen before.

In some cases (the harmless ones) it's oil additive, but in other cases it can show coolant contamination. It

seems harmless here since wear looks good, so we'll just watch and see if it lingers next time. Averages are

based on ~4,000 miles on the oil for this type of engine and you've got better wear on a longer run -- that's

great. There was just a trace of fuel here, but that's harmless. The TBN was nice and strong. As long as

you're not losing coolant, try 8K miles.

sorry it didnt copy\ paste well......any way the sodium was 63 and they stated could be additive in oil or leak of coolant in the oil.....

no coolant level drop in 6000 miles.

guess I will send it to greg and make sure he is ok with the analysis...

sorry I couldnt get it to work!

For anyone who has had oil analyses done, how about these reports from Blackstone Labs?

2 different 928's: a 93 GTS witj 90,000 miles (from a fiend) and my '90GT with 106,000 miles.
The GTS oil had only 2000 miles on it. The GT oil 7,000 miles.
The GT gets driven a Whole lot harder than the GTS

The report shows Chromium in both, the same level, but apparently high. Is this normal for our engines?
Any ideas where the chromium comes from?

Peter,

These don't look good. The chrome, iron and copper for the 90GT, while improved, are still much too high for comfort. Chromium is rings, iron is piston skirts or cam lobes, copper is bearings.

The oil for the 90GT is also reported as 5W/30, that is much too thin and likely related to the high wear. It is also very low on ZDDP (zinc phosphate)-- zinc is only 700, recommended levels are generally 1100-1200 or higher.

For the GT I would change out the oil (and filter) immediately for 20w-50, Mobil-1 15w-50 has good zinc levels. Then run another few thousand miles and re-test, and hope that arrests the wear.

The GTS is very high for chromium and high for iron but not copper. Zinc is OK (1250), so probably rings and piston skirts.

For comparison, Blackstone reports for our '90 GT were all in the 1-2 ppm range for chromium, 5-6 ppm for iron, and 6-10 ppm for copper. The most recent check was at 234K miles. On teardown we found worn but healthy pistons and bores, some copper showing on the #1 and #3 (thrust) main bearings but bearings healthy otherwise, no other issues.

For reference here's the Blackstone report for our GT at 234K also showing the most recent half-dozen samples. The oil was Torco 20w-50 SR-1 (synthetic) or TR-1 (partial syn), the 205K sample was Amsoil 20w-50 ARO.

Thanks for the comparison Jim. I had no baseline. A little more information:

my GT has driven approx 20k miles after I installed new piston rings and rod bearings. That's when I installed the Kuhn turbo's
I think the copper comes from the (turbo) oil scavenging pump. This is a small gear pump with brass gears.

The GTS is from Larry White from Chattanooga. Before I disassembled the engine it had a very bad oil consumption problem ( 1qrt/300 miles). I installed new piston rings about 3000 miles ago. Oil consumption dropped to about 1qtr/1500 miles

I would expect that the high chrome to come from the new rings wearing in and Larry's GTS has had only 3k miles with the new rings. I am sure they're not 100% seated yet.
My GT has a much lower Chrome level. Hopefully it will get lower. It is a bit of a concern to me.
By the way, the oil was not what is stated. Both engines had Mobil 1 10W40 in them

Also, the report with the single data column is from the GTS.
The other report shows both, the GTS and the GT. Blackstone did not read my information right and it looks to me that they thought that the may 2016 oil was from the same car as the march 2016 car. That isn't so.
The reason I sent my GT's oil in for analysis, was because when I saw the high Chrome in the GTS that had recently installed new rings, I wanted to compare it with my GT. I would expect that the rings would be worn in after 20k miles.

Peter,

Thanks for the added info. I would expect rings to be broken in by 20K, but it takes a while. Keep checking, and tell Blackstone that it is a new build with 20K, Alusil bores. They are pretty good about this analysis stuff, if you provide some background. I would keep checking results with every change, for a while. (We do it routinely, cheap insurance).

Also be very consistent with the "Unit ID" code-- that's what they use to file results and create summaries.

I know you said both engines were 10w40 Mobil-1, but the "90GT2016" shows low zinc and low viscosity, consistent with 5w30. Viscosity is too low to be a 10w40.
