Default 928 as my economy car...

Yep...the Red Witch is my economy car.

I filled up Thursday night on the way to work. Now, tonight, is the 5th trip to and from work. The fuel gauge is just under half. In my beloved Explorer, I would have already filled up again, and been down a quarter of a tank.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Wow! You are a brave man.

I love my Red Witch, but I would not trust her as a DD. Yet.
My Explorer and S-10 are always on back up.

Kyle, my '89 GT was my daily driver for 7 years, sun, rain, sleet, and snow. Washed every week and waxed at least once a month. Truly was the best car I had/have ever owned. (May Karma do things to my ex for losing that car!) Put a smile on my face every single time I turned the key. I don't know if I'll ever love another car the way I did that one. Only left me stranded once, when the clutch hose blew. (She still got me to work stuck in 3rd gear, I just couldn't leave until I swapped in a new hose.) Other than that it was all just normal wear/maintenance items. God I love 928's.

Hi my name is Chris and I'm an addict.......

My 928 did my DD duty for at least five years, and was the vehicle of choice for most driving until a couple years ago. "Daily Driver" means different things when you need to go further than my home office though.

Seth, although the 928 may be kinder to you at the pump, the other costs of keeping the car happy will quickly overtake those same costs on the Explorer and S10. That said, many of the "other costs" for our thirty-ish year old 928's are age-related, and will continue whether driven or not. So drive it whenever you can and enjoy!

Chris: killing me...
However, very good to know that your GT served well as a DD. I was not trying to imply that a 928 couldn't be a DD. Just harkening back to the New Visitor's sticky about...'I just bought a used 928 and it is all I have to drive.'

I have no doubts the Red Witch could be a DD once I shake all the bugs out. Who am I kidding...since I got back on the 8th, I have driven my Explorer once, and that was for groceries. So, not only is the Red Witch my economy car, she is my DD for now.

and, yes, you are an addict.

WyattsRide: yep...

Imo000: Too bad.

dr bob: Please understand that I am not looking at this about money. I am a gearhead. That means I do stupid things with money. Like buy a 928. I have blown more money on my 928S in the past month than I have spent cumulatively on my Explorer and my S-10. I have no illusions that the Red Witch will in no way shape or form be cheap. I accept that and am good with it. The Explorer and S-10 have had money shoveled into them in the past to get them to a level of reliability, though the S-10 is getting a little ratty. The Red Witch is at the beginning of this process. I have bought a new shovel...
I bought her to drive, and given how much I have spent, and will continue to spend, I am getting my money's worth.
My back and neck are slowly getting used to the seats in a 928, and I plan on driving her as much as I can, as often as I can.

Thank you for your advice and perspective!

SeanR: That is what I am doing. My original intent was to buy a 928 as a toy, and treat it as such. Work on it, make it better, make it mine, drive it some. Drive my Explorer daily.

Now...the PO is probably going to put a hit out on me. The Red Witch was his regional show car. He loved it, babied it, shoveled money into it. But, he didn't drive it much. This 928 lived snug as a bug in a garage under a car cover. Which is why she is beautiful!
Now...in my care, I am driving the hell out of her. It bothers me to a point to expose such a nice car to the daily drudge of driving back and forth and the vulnerability of parking lots.
However...this car is SO MUCH FUN TO DRIVE!!! I have never had any kind of vehicle that could be considered performance, or even handling.
Pushing the loud pedal makes the most wonderful sounds. Now that I am going to spin the tach up past 5 grand, it will be even better.
The feeling when downshifting and pouring on the coal is exhilarating and intoxicating.
And...my shallow side comes out. I work Third Shift Maintenance. Everyone, especially those in the front office, assume my DNA does not spiral, and I drive a cement truck to work. So, it is great fun to rumble into the parking lot in a Guards Red Porsche 928...

So, yeah. I am probably contributing to the decreased value and condition of a 928, but I am having a great time doing it!

Nearly everyone who bought a 928 new, bought it to DRIVE and most drove them a lot !! It is why Porsche made 928s, for them to be driven. Enjoy YOUR CAR !!!

It seems that the 928 really does better if it is driven almost daily. I know it sounds crazy, but all of those old relays and valves like to be flexed! I always worry about what might have "locked up" during the winter storage months when I bring mine out fo hibernation.

^^^ Amen to that! Driving also parses the time-related "sniggles" a bit, so they can be managed on a ongoing basis. This can be easier to manage than rolling out to the garage into a ran-perfectly-when-parked 928 and discovering a bucket full of accumulated sniggles.

For sure the CIS cars need to be driven regularly to keep all the fuel injection system happy and healthy. There's nowhere near enough fun in going through CIS for corrosion and varnish-related issues that are inevitable in stored CIS cars.

Can I get a what-what? CIS Fuel system varnish is where the factory got the Cosmoline they spray on 928s to punish us for not driving them.
