Default HVAC Selector not selecting : 1987 S4

Hi,

This is my problem :

Sometime, when i slide the selector between to modes or temps, i do not get the good selection.

It seem like the selector is not connecting to the circuit.

If i slide back and re-select few times, i finish by getting the right selection.

I can see super small spark between the selector and the HVAC controller.

Can it be a bad contact ? Can i replace the selector or sand it/clean it ?

The picture is not from my car. It is only the demonstrate what i am trying to explain.

*Sorry. English is my second language.

If you take it apart you will likely find spark traces between some of the junctions on the circuit board, and/or breaks or burnt areas on the large wiper contacts. These can be cleaned up and repaired.

Can clean board tracings. Use a circuit board specific cleaner so as not to completely dissolve the adhesive properties. Once cleaned apply a thin coat of Vaseline/petrolatum ointment with your finger over the traces where the lever arm contacts during its sweep.

I'm not sure I would do that. The Achille's heel of this design is that the slider is exposed to atmospheric pollutants, i.e. dust. Vaseline + dust = grinding compound (and vaseline is a dielectric; if you wanted lubrication a conductive grease would be more appropriate). I think this is why the WSM specifically recommends against lubrication on the horn button wiper.
