Default Rebuilding alternator?

How difficult is it to rebuilt the alternator? All symthoms shows the regulator is malfunctioning (e.g. voltmeter peaks at 14 v then 12 v and lights gets excessively bright when this happens).

I found some info in the search option and I just completed "annual maintenance" on grounds etc with no luck. So is rebuilding the alternator a DIY job? Is is straight forward on replacing the regulator?

Btw, my car is driving pretty well for a project car. Last time I drove it for 15 miles. What can I say, even my wife is impressed (she drove it today for a few miles.

However, the alternator is the next challange that I am willing to take.

Any advise is welcome.

Gio.

it is the voltage regulator which has pooped out, dont drive the car like this 16 volts will damage componants,

rebuilding, well i can do it, it isn't hard, but then I also think rebuilding cvs, and pulling trannies and engines.

Check the real volts with a DVM on the engine bay post, or from inside via the cigar lighter. Mine has flicked as high as 16 on the dash voltmeter, but a dvm shows it tops at ~14, and its been doing it over 2 years now with the same battery.

Or alternativley get it rebuilt by any competant local shop, they charged me $110 which included cleaning (full of ATF from leaking power steering lines), new bearings and a new adjustable voltage regulator. And of course a warranty.

Didn't tell them it came of a Porsche though .... guess the Audi's are pretty similar.

I will be making some calls tomorrow. I'm excited to have the alternator rebuilt so I can testdrive my car :-). Currently I am afraid of driving the car since I had the brain rebuilt last year.

A local shop wanted to charge me $170 to rebuilt my alternator. No thanks. I got an aftermarket regulator from Souther Alternator (in BHM, AL) for $35 incl. tax. Put it back on and works like a charm. Not a big job, easy and straight forward!!

Giovanni,
What was the original alt?
1. Bosche
2. Paris/Rhone
3. Other.
Did you get the part/# and Manufacturer's name of the Regulator?
TIA

My Alt is Paris Rhone. Aftermarket regulator is a Transpo IP2700. Most websites sells it for $45 and I was amazed to find it locally at a cheaper price. There's more info on Transpo's website at http://195.125.241.148/Catalog/Car_Fr.htm
