Default Brakes Pucker up!

Another reason to check a car before you drive it.
While driving an undocumented 85-928S manual the brakes began to drag. First the right rear then right front then all four. The pedal got hard. I was driving in slow traffic and I only need to to go another 14km or 10miles, so I continued on. Then the brake would release suddenly, felt like I was hit from behind. It did it a few more times, bind, hard pedal, release, then no brakes. Pedal to the floor. It would return and there was some pressure at the very bottom of the pedal travel.
It's a good thing I wasn't on the highway.
My guess is master cylinder.
The car had no history and was sitting for at least 3 years.
As a rule any car I get the first thing I do is timing belt then flush the brakes and change the rubber hoses. I was stressed a bit as it began to rain so even the hand brake was less effective. The day after I can laugh with my friends. The wife failed to see the humor.

Don't rule out bad calipers, I had the same issue on my w123 and was sure it was mc but turned out to be bad front calipers. Replaced them with a set of rebuilt units and everything has been fine ever since.
