Any hints on removing the triple square bolts? They are not moving and I dont want to strip the heads!

It's all about getting maximum purchase of the triple square/XZN socket in the recess in the bolt, to minimize the risk stripping. Oh, and brute force with a rattle gun.

1. Get the oil out of the recess in the head.
2. Use a good quality XZN 8mm socket, Hazet or Snap-On. Pricey but worth not buggering the bolts...
2a. Consider tapping on the socket inserted into each bolt head, to 'shock' the threads a bit first. Not sure it's necessary but I recall people suggesting it in the past.

3. Zip them out with the socket on an impact gun, while applying good downward force on each bolt.

Learned all of the above, after my 1st attempt in 2009:

Here are a couple pics of how I drilled mine out.

p.s. I changed all my bolts to the allen head kind. So if you want some of the cheese head bolts to match yours...you are welcome to the ones I have.

Did the factory apply threadlocker to these?

I found nothing that indicated a thread locker was needed on these fasteners.

Ok, this procedure is going to open a major can of worms. I can say with 100% certainty that one or more of the lower bolts will be damaged if I try to remove them. I cannot get in there with the impact wrench and they will not budge with a regulat ratchet.
I will do as Curt did and leave my cam plugs as is and take my chances.

John, its really not that bad. if a bolt is striped, just drill the head of the bolt off, the rest of the bolt will come out by hand when the cap is removed.

How impossible would that be with the engine in the car? I suppose I could cut the heads off with a dremel

is there enough clearance next to the fire wall to get a drill in there?...if there is, use a drill bit a little larger than the opening of the cheese head bolt. you only need to go a few MM's deep. Use some duck tape and paper to make sure any filings from the drill do not migrate into the motor.

I pulled the ps head in the car and had to drill about 5 of those damn triple square heads. They are tough to loosen. Once the bolt head is drilled off the rest just threads right out. Spray with penetrant, tap the heads with a hammer, clean triple square cavity well and put a bit of rubbing compound on your bit to help it from riding up and stripping the head. Good luck!
