Having said that, this thread is about valuation and not driveability and for valuation, the cosmetics play a larger factor in many cases.

.....I plan to take it to a guru mechanic I know for timing belt/water pump and there's a couple small items not working correctly I'll have him fix but the car is solid as far as I can tell............
I'm deep in money into my Speedie, so want to know that this is a fair trade (it's an even trade, no cash).
Thanks guys,
Chris

There are $7500 356 Speedster replicas and there are some that approach $100k these days. Depends on what the OP has, what the condition is, what options etc.....I have had 3 of them and have one now. I also had a 550 Spyder replica...so I have a bit of experience, not much, just a bit. A decent /recent 356 Replica will sell for $20,000-$35,000. Those by Classic Motor Car built 20, 30, or more years ago are at the bottom end of the food chain and I have seen a few recently under $10k. A new 356 repica today from Special Editions, or a like high end builder starts at about $35k and can go up in a hurry, think Suby engine, 5 speed Porsche tranny, turbos, leather interior, premium soft top, premium paint.

Price checks from afar are always tough. It sounds like a good example but I would research the value of a top dollar 1985 and see if you are in the right ball park. You can use eBay as a rough guide.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Porsche-928-...m=121935013234
That one is listed for $19,800 with 79,xxx miles. 5 speed adds $1k vs Auto
In the end it is for you to decide what your replica is worth to you.
If you are able to verify timing belt and water pump service in the last two years then it might be a good deal for all.
But, if you trade your baby for the 85 and then have to sink another $5000 in it you might have a different attitude.
There is a great 928 mechanic 134 miles NW of you in Raleigh called Ray Munsch, and a great shop a little further from you in Atlanta called Garage 928. I would take any new to me 32 valve engine to one of these guys before putting any serious miles on it.

The Rep is an ok car. Minimalist and not an every day car. I probably have $11-12k in it.
It needed work. The 928 needs a few bucks spent as did the Rep. The 928 owner just got it but it's not his thing. He's a Vw guy so it works for both of us. I'm happy as the seller will be with my Rep.

Well, if the 356 replica is a $11k - $12k car, I would think you did ok.
Congrats & welcome.
These cars aren't really all that complicated (at least not compared to anything MY 2000+). Lots of systems, but they are all independent. Depending on how much you want to do yourself, anything mechanical you need to know is on here. If you can't find it with a search, just ask. You will quickly learn who to listen to and who to ignore.
And there's a bit of tradition for new owners:

Ray is a good friend and is who looked at the car today. Says it's an outstanding condition car that needs only a little TLC to make concourse. I'm going to have him do the belt/pump as well as a few other items. He said I've easily gotten the better end of the deal. But he's biased :-)
There is a large annual gathering just the other side of Asheville the first weekend of June.

The Singer brothers are in your neck of the woods and usually make the trip over. You can see just how well you did when you get to see the other 50 cars that will be there this year. Hope to see you there.
