Default Vacuum Reservoir

Hi All,

This might seem like a dumb question but do all models of 928 have a vacuum reservoir?
I removed the wheel liner on the left side to fit a new alternator duct and thought it should be sitting above the cruise control pot thing. I could see a few vacuum hoses but they just ran through on their way to somewhere else.
It's a right hand drive car so I thought maybe its on the other side but that is full of the washer fluid bottle.
Needless to say the HVAC doesn't work and is on my list to fix...

If they should be present on all models then obviously one of the PO's removed it

Thanks,
Gary

On the rearward side of the wheel well, you should notice the vacuum reservoir and cruise control vacuum actuator. Remove the rearward splash shield for access.

Hi Ken,

I did and the cruise control actuator was there but not the reservoir. If it should always be there and didn't move to a different location then I'll get onto eBay.

Cheers,
Gary

Gary,

Welcome to the list- first golden rule of positing it to ensure you clearly state what model/year you own as this can make a difference to assessment.
In answer to your question all I can say is that all the 928's I have seen use a vacuum reservoir [that covers examples from about 1984 through to the GTS].

The vacuum reservoir can fail [i.e. collapse] or so I have seen in our very hot climate. Ireland does not qualify in that regard.

The RHD drive models do have some features *** about face as it were but not the vac reservoir [as I understand]. The models I have seen need the vacuum reservoir to actuate the various solenoid valve controlled inputs that operate the various flaps. The reservoir is also needed to operate the flappy valve on S4 and GTS inlet manifold. I rather suspect you have a pre S4 model?

If as has been said it is a pre S4 model, on RHD cars the reservoir is located where I said . ie passenger side front, rearmost section of the wheel arch.

Unless of course it's missing ?

The year of the car would be very useful.
Earlier models with vacuum locks have two vacuum reservoirs.

Thanks for the responses, sorry it's an '86 Euro S2 model. I believe it has motor operated locks.
Without the reservoir I would expect HVAC and cruise to work with small throttle openings as there would be a steady good vacuum but fail as the engine vacuum drops.
Anyway, I'll hunt down a replacement and figure out how it was bypassed in the first place.

I still have not fully explored every inch the car and every time I open something up I find a new thing to fix or undo a previous owner's half ***'d fix.
I'd love to trace every previous owner, that's still around, and hear their story. The car's not in bad shape but along the way owners took short cuts and quick fixes, it's a mixed blessing as it made the car affordable for me but frustrating that others bought the car without really caring about it.

Sounds as though you understand the concept so no need to "sell the need" to you.

Unfortunately way too many of these cars are hacked around. If you paid bottom dollar and have money in the piggy bank to put it to rights go for it. Plenty of moral/technical support available here.

Lots of things can and do go wrong- some with use some with age- this is perfectly normal. One can optimise expenditure but you cannot avoid expenditure and expect the thing to run anywhere close to how Porsche intended it.

Get it right and the 928 is a very rewarding experience. If you are not prepared for it, the thing can be a nightmare. Even good ones take a lot of love and attention to keep them on track.

Newcomers always score well by posting some intro pics.

Hi Fred,

Here are some pictures the previous owner took, as you can see it's not a basket case and cosmetically it's just details.

Thanks again for your advise.

I can tell you that without the reservoir the brakes do not work as well. Long ago when I was stripping a car for the track I thought I wouldn't need it. I later added it back.

Gary,

It is far from a basket case if the pics are anything to go by it is just the engine bay that needs a bit of detailing- below something to whet your appetite!

Wow, bet you didn't achieve that overnight, very nice !
I'm focused on getting mine through an inspection next Friday and then work down the to-do list at a steady pace, hopefully fixing at a faster rate than things break.

Great looking car.

Yes, it should be against the law for PO'ers to buy black spray paint...lol.

Nothing that a few days of detailing can't straight out though. The rest of the car looks awesome.

I believe you should have a vacuum reservior, weird that it is missing...but that probably explains the lack of other things working.

Good luck with her and welcome to Rennlist!

Brian.

Correct but that was about 5 years ago- not quite so pretty at the moment but nothing that a day or so in my friend's detailing shop cannot recover for the most part.
