been there.... I haven't driven my 928 since 2009-2010 time frame..... its going to be a while so I feed my car craving with other cars until then.... the current is a 2000 Mercedes Sl500, which has a removeable hardtop as well as a soft top and is a blast to drive.... very 928 ish..... and they can be had all day long for 10K for nice low mileage examples.... 345 ft lbs of torque..... so they have plenty of get up and go... they are nice and solid built like the 928...
Not sure where you are located, but I am sure there are Rennlisters close that can help you out put the tranny in on a weekend so you are back out on the road. I know how you feel about withdrawls. I just took mine out after a 3 month rest and drove it like Ken Block because I was so happy.

I'm in Sin City. I've got a lift, but it's outside. I didn't want my car on the lift in the weather, and summers in Vegas can rival Hell for hot.

89 auto is year specific - A28/16 has the same 2.54 final drive ratio as the RoW 87/88 auto's (which are A28/14), but also has a different set of ratios
Here's a spreadsheet I just knocked up to compare the S4 autos at 6000rpm.. (based on stock S4 front wheel size for wheel circumference)
A28/12 - USA 87/88
A28/14 - RoW 87/88
A28/16 - USA 89, RoW 89
So the 89 has a shorter first gear than the RoW 87/88, but a taller 2nd gear.. and 3rd/4th are basically the same.
The other thing that jumps out at me, is that the USA 87/88 will hit more than 40mph in *reverse* (note that my calculted speeds are at 6000rpm - so redline is higher )
If finding an 89 trans is hard in the USA, you may be able to find a RoW trans in Canada, as they've been importing them from Japan and Europe for a while under theri 15 year rule.
If you buy another one to drive it will have to be sorted, and that's gonna cost a premium. If you have the funds I say go for it, and you can always sell it down the line. I told my wife that I bought the 928 to help hedge against inflation.
Wether it worked or not, I still bought it lol. I guess it's true, instead of having the money just sitting there in the bank why not buy something that will appreciate in value?
