When I got this '88 S4, it was far from mint. It hadn't been abused, but hadn't been babied either. The LSD 5 Speed made it a great candidate for the track, and that's why I bought it.
As Kevin Lacy and I were preparing it for the track, we removed the interior and put it into storage.
What really stood out to me was the condition of the leather surfaces.
The tops of the back seats have endured the sun over the years and are somewhat sun bleached. The leather on the tops is stiffer than the rest. I'm guessing that the tops can be revived/refinished, but I haven't tried this.
But the front seats are in really good condition. The leather is still supple and there's very little signs of wear. No considerable scuffs, cracks, chafing anywhere - even on the driver's bolster. I can only imagine that the hides that Porsche sourced for custom leather like Cancan Red, was of a higher quality than others..but that's a guess. I'm also guessing that the front seats probably had covers on them for most of their lives, explaining why they've been so well preserved.
Although this car may never be brought back to original, my initial thought was to keep the original interior - just in case. At this point, I'd prefer to sell this interior to someone who can really use it, instead of it languishing in storage.
The Cancan Red over Black is a really nice looking interior IMO, mostly because the red is a darker tone with black piping, and everything in this particular interior isn't red...only the front and back seats, rear console and door inserts. The rest of the interior is black. It's a really nice compliment, especially with some red trimmed black floor mats.
These seats/console and inserts would look great in a car with a black interior with tired seats.
I'm trying to gauge interest here, and I hope to sell this interior to a Rennlister.
I'll be posting more details and pics once I have a chance to clean these up a bit, but for now, here's a couple of pics of the interior before we pulled it:
I've always regarded red interiors to be dated, but really they aren't. Look at contemporary Porsches, Jags, Aston Martins, etc. and you'll see some nice red over black combos:
Anyway, some input on what to do with this interior and maybe some suggestions on how to best sell it would be greatly appreciated....
EDIT:
I've put a bunch of pics up on a public Shutterfly site. Go here and scroll to the bottom.
Reasonable shipping might be the challenge, but I've heard that Greyhound may be a cost-effective option.
Bump.
Price is negotiable within reason.
Anyone on the East Coast who's interested in this interior? Maybe we can meet halfway, or I can load them up when I'm coming your way. I travel to and from DC to Maine 2x/year, and find myself going to Hatteras NC every so often....
Hoi,
They're 8-way non-heated. Pretty sure the motors all work. IIRC, they were working for both seats, but the driver's seat switch was glitchy, so we pulled the passenger unit to test it. I'm not sure if we ever got around to testing the operation of all motors, but I'll guarantee that they work.
The car was a Cancan on Black interior. Everything that is red is included, including cards, console and rear side console bolsters.
I took a bunch of pics of everything that you can see here.
Which car were you thinking about putting this interior in? Looks like you have a stable...
Thanks for the quick reply JP, and I am thinking about using it in the '89 S4, especially when I switch out the current black S4 brakes with red calipers. However, I would have to replace all the carpeting (currently cashere beige, like the seats) with black to match what was in your car.
I think it is very nice and a great upgrade for my car.
Question: I currently have "rear ac" vents, can I just bolt yours on and take out the system? My AC doesn't work anyway.

This '88 had black carpeting with red piping - kind of the opposite of the seats. It looked really good, but the carpeting/mats weren't in great shape from what I recall.
I have the door cards which are also included, but they're still in the car since I didn't have cards to replace them with.
Re: the back non-air console, I'd think that a non-air console would easily replace a rear air console, but I would ask the gurus how to properly remove/disconnect/cap off your rear air unit. I'd think that your system could benefit from the rear lines being capped as close to the ac components up front, but that's just a guess.
Jim, thoughts on this?
