So what I thought would be a simple replacement of the connector has turned more complicated as a result of my ignorance of electrical repair. The black wire had a slice in insulation just above the ferrule at the cable end (which I mistook for the remants of the hard as plastic boot) so obviously I stripped the sheathing below the ferrule to find only two insulated wires inside and what appears to be bare wire inside the sheathing which was then twisted and insulated above the ferrule. I have no idea how to put humpy dumpty back together again, can someone give me some direction on how to correctly strip the sheathing and how another ferrule can be crimped on?
You need to remove the metal connectors from the plastic AMP connector, obtain new ones, and crimp them onto your three wires. The bare braided wire is a shield wire to keep the signal on the other two wires as pure (free from interference) as possible.
I do have a new connector and the proper open barrel crimper to get the connector back together, but when I stripped the sheathing the bare wire got cut right at the top of the sheathing. So now I'm guessing I have to very carefully strip the sheathing a few inches down (hopefully not cutting the wire again) and then protect the bare wire with a couple of layers of heat shrink or fusing silicon tape. Hopefully that will be enough for the crimped strain relief tabs of the connectors to do their job. Does the metal ferrule I cut off need to be replaced?
