In the US, the term coined by Jay Kempf (belt tool guy) originally referred to the CIS cars, so just the first few years. The definition has muddied over the intervening years to sometimes mean anything pre-S4, based on the body styles. Add in Euro cars that have CIS for several years after US cars switched to electronic injection, and it gets even muddier. Think S1 as the first body style, S2 adds the rear lip spoiler and the front trim, S3 as the ROW 86 and US 86.5, S4 officially designated as such, then GTS. So OB = S1 with CIS.
I'm sure there will be discussion on this. Some may come from folks who were on Porschelist at the time it happened.

Interesting. A while back someone referred to my 78 as a OB, but kind suggested my 84 wasn't.
So, for the next three months I've sat in the garage looking at the two juxtaposed...and can't come up with any differences in the sheet metal.
Weird though, if it is a reference to the engine type...since you would think OE (old engine) would be more factual.
Thank you,
Brian.

My understanding (which may well be wrong) is that OB refers to the original, CIS, no spoiler cars. 78 & 79. In the US at least, they are significantly different than later cars.
The later "early" cars (up to 86) are called "SOB" for "Sorta Old Body" (or "Bugger" or whatever "b" word you choose.

This is correct. Where is James? He is the most vocal defender of the label. OB means old bugger (with k-jet), not old body. So Brian you are correct, no difference in sheet metal between the 78 and 84, but the differences are under the hood.

Old Body, before the plastic front air dam and faux rubber rear spoiler.
