Odd Gear Indicator Behavior
Hi all,
Spent the weekend fixing a few things on my 87. Headlight and high intensity washers now fixed, new hood insulation pad, did the
Leatherique on my seats.......
Noticed something while in and out of the car this weekend, and I am sure it's been this way since I have had it.
When I turn the car off, with the trans in Park, but leave the key in, the "P" stays lit on the gear indicator, even with the key totally off, and doors closed. I waited for the timer to expire on the interior lights, but it stays on until I pull the key out. If I reinsert the key then, the light stays off.
Couldn't find anything in the archives. I guess I have 2 questions:
1) Is this just normal behavior? (wouldnt think so but never know)
2) What might the cause be?
Thanks as always.
Jay

Jay;
I have not done exhaustive testing on this, but the shift postion indicator on my car does a similar thing as well. The power seems to be cut when the key is removed - not simply moved to the "OFF" position. I have wondered about it, but it probably has something to do with the ability to service/view certain components with the key inserted, but without the ignition on.
There are several complicated electrical interconnection on the 928 (at least the mid and later models). Today all this type of stuff is handled with computers...makes you marvel at how this gets done with much more basic components. It also partially explains why electrical problems are so common and electrical system maintenance is so important.
