Default Strange front wing

I´ve bought a used right hand front wing from a 1984 euro 928S. It has got a countersunk circle on the lower part, behind the wheel arch.

Do anyone know what it is used for? I´ve never seen it on another car. Is it possible that it isn´t an OEM part?

It is possible that the wing isn´t original for that parts car, because it is repainted.

That recessed area is usually hidden behind lower rocker panel trim pieces found on later cars. Not sure if the 84 MY had the lower trim pieces so if not, the front fender you bought may have been replaced on the 84 at some point with a newer version.

what you have is a fender from a 1987 S4 series,
these cars had the added on lower body cladding.

S3 and earlier did not have these indentations

Correct .... so then it is missing the lower part of the fender in front of the wheel opening....which is why I requested a picture...

Some more pics...

Does the 1987 have different fenders than newer S4? The part in front of the wheel looks as it should on an 928s.

There´s also a question about the holes for the protective moulding. The holes are smaller than usual, so it is not possible to use the mounting bushes.

There is also a reinforcement in the front corner of the fender that i don´t recognize.

Is there any evidence of welding body work on the inside of the front lower section ?? Possibly was an S-4 fender which had a piece of skin from an early fender welded on to mount the front spoiler ???? S-4 nose wraps around so fender is much shorter.
It is easy to modify early fenders by cutting off and adding a flange.

No signs of welding. I don´t think it´s a S4 fender welded together with an older one.

In the first picture in post # 7 you can see the remnants of the S4 skirt - a horizontal crease in the paint.

Likewise in the picture in the first post, in the fender just aft of the wheel opening, as to the S4 rocker covering. But, none of this helps explain how or why there is the S4 indent in what is obviously an earlier fender.

I used to be wrong before but I venture a very wild guess: could this be an aftermarket fender made of steel?

One of the pics seems to show rust around the lower hole on the outside of the fender. It could as well be contact corrosion between alloy wing and steel bolts

Try a magnet!

It´s aluminium, not steel. Has anyone seen aftermarket fenders for sale?
