Default Putting G28/11 into '78

Possibly purchasing a g28/11 transmission for my '78's g28/03 (that had trouble going into 1st gear per PO, likely syncro?). Do I need to replace the torque tube, shaft, intermediate shaft, etc? Or can I get away with replacing only the transmission as a direct drop in?

Also, any differences between '83 euro's clutch vs 85-86's?

Thanks-Hoi

People are frantically searching for original parts for their '78 and '79 928s, to try and make them as original as possible.....

You sure you want to swap out all the pieces required to put in a later transmission because yours needs a routine rebuild?

....it's a bit like cutting off your entire hand because you have a split fingernail.

you need all the bits possibly including the rear suspension cross member....not a drop in !! same basic clutch parts 83-86 but 78 clutch and fly wheel are different.

If you go through with this, put me on the list of people interested in the broken transmission.

The more research I have done for this conversion, the more I am less likely to do it. I was planning to keep everything I take off of my '78 #413, but wanted to play with a "better transmission" and the euro S engine.

Therefore, since it is not a direct drop in, requiring new cross members, I may be more inclined to sent it out for rebuild.

Thank you for the advice Greg, and I will be getting in touch with your company. Do I need a "reservation" for a transmission rebuild? I am from the east coast, and I will need it shipped out.

Thanks for the info, everyone.

If the car is nice, I would certainly retain the original gearbox.

I enjoy the "feel" of the early transmissions, being a Porsche guy my entire life and being used to the feedback from the Porsche design synchros.

I do understand why they went to the Borg Warner design synchros in 1985......many of these cars were being sold to women drivers.

An early transmission, properly done (with a clutch that releases completely), shifts very nicely. Yes, the synchros in 1st and 2nd get a bit tired at about 80,000 miles and start to crunch with rapid shifts, but not may people are going to put 80,000 more miles on these cars.

I'm going to "get to" a couple of transmissions, next week, that have been here for over a month (maybe two)....I'm always swamped with work. Try to coordinate with Mary when you are shipping versus when I will "touch it".
