Default Stelvio Pass

This is a short video from our trip in 2009

It illustrates perfectly how beautiful yet frustrating it is to drive here

Thanks for the video. St Pass been on the bucket list for awhile. IMHO would be much more pleasurable renting a motorcycle for that pass T

I don't think so, and I've certainly never touched the TT. Can you still hear it on a more recent road video such as this?

For those playing along at home who did not get their query answered Stelvio pass is in Northern Italy and presumably in the Italian part of the Alps. The [real] Top Gear team drove it and declared it the best road in the world for motoring I seem to remember.

One item on my bucket list would be to ride a BMW motorbike through the French, Swiss, German and Italian Alps. Still hope to achieve this as long as I can **** a leg over the saddle and if not, in a 928 or my Cayenne Turbo S would be just fine as well.

Regards

Fred

Would you believe it- shortly after posting in this thread I sat down to watch TV and eat my dinner and what was on one of the locally available satellite channels- you guessed correctly- Top Gear featuring their drive through the Selvio pass! Divine intervention? It most certainly is an awesome road to drive.

I was tempted by the Top Gear film of the Romanian Pass - Transfagarasan, until I realised that nothing is real. The pass was shut to traffic for two days during filming, so what you see is nothing like what you'd get if you tried to drive it yourself - and getting there is no mean feat (from London at least).

I seem to remember they had to drive through a swamp and a few chicken farms to get to that one! As you say not everything is what it seems on Top Gear other than possibly the riot in PATAGONIA and even then I suspect "rent a crowd" would not be too expensive over there.

That was a wonderful virtual tour of a road I'll probably never get to see in person, let alone drive in my 928. Thank you so much for posting it!

Reality of Stelvio Pass. I would still love to drive it!

Fred, thank you for the background. Took a train from Locarno to Stresa and it was breathtaking, and probably not quite like this run. I might rather be a passenger on this in order to enjoy the scenery and the video let me do that as close as I'll probably ever get. OTH, driving it is it's own experience.

I rad that the OP found this pass frustrating to drive. I can imagine that. Picture yourself in your Porsche wanting to enjoy the climb with this 48 hairpins and while fully enjoying the ride, you find a dar red 1980 Golf (rabbit) diesel with 50 hp and not enough air, strugling after every turn to gain some momentum. And in front of this VW is a bus, trying to bring people from A to B. No choice but hang on and watch the scenery whil crawling to the top. I know about this, BTDT. I was the guy in the dark red diesel VW (back in 1988).

Watched this again with my wife. She said she would have got car sick if she was in the car.

What happened at about 5:14? Did you scrape the nose on the wall on the left? Damage?

What's kind of interesting in the picture in this post is the images of what must be some of the original road or trail over this part of the pass. One can kind of imagine just what kind of conveyances might have been used over the originals. We have a lot of that in the Colorado Rockies over many passes and such including old stage coach roads, old wagon freight roads, and old railroad right-of-ways.
