1981 Euro/1982 Weissach /'88 S4 Radio Pics/Info
I have been looking for stock radio's for my 1981 Euro, '82 Weissach, and '88 S4. Want to make sure I'm looking for the correct unit.
For the '81 Euro and Weissach, I'm assuming that the correct radio is the Bamberg QTS model, but I'm not 100% on that. Anyone have pic of an ORIGINAL radio in either car? Just trying to see exactly what I'm looking for.
My Euro came with this same unit but not installed - so not sure if original to the car or not:
Does the Weissach require the same unit? Was there various radio models that would be installed based on options?
Same with the S4 - any pics/model numbers/names of the original radio - can I tell from the option codes what radio should be in there?
the option code reads: '158 Radio "Monterey" - 86 "Reno" - 87' - does that mean Blaupunkt "Reno" for 1986 and "Monterey" for '87 and beyond? What "sqr" does that relate to?

I have an 81 model also and believe that is the correct radio. I have a sales brochure for the 1981 and it shows that radio. I don't think there was a special radio for the Weissach edition.

Weissach came with the Bamberg QTS
I have been searching for many years and bought about a dozen Bamberg QTS units. None of them work fully. I talked with some German radio experts and they say that there is a component in the QTS which fails due to age and cannot be repaired or replaced.
Another suggestion is to gut a Bamberg and replace the guts with a modern hidden radio system or add a hidden system to the car leaving the none working Bamberg in place.

If you haven't seen it, here's your afternoon timewaster. Not Porsche specific, but typically Germanic in its detail.
http://www.radiomuseum.org/?language_id=2
Leave the model designation blank, select radios only under Model Type, put "Blaupunkt' under Manufacturer, and enter the desired time period (say, 1977 to 1988).
Here's the entry for the Bamberg QTS Super Arimat.

In Rob Edward's second link in the above post, there is a wiring schematic for the Bamberg. Surely some of our electronic gurus could diagnose and replace defective diodes or whatever?

Same goes for the Alpine head units used circa 89 to 95 - parts no longer available to facilitate the repair. There are companies that will gut and replace the innards with modern components but they want between $800 and $1000 to do that and that was a couple of years ago.

The best place to buy the older head units is German eBay. There are a couple of working Bamberg QTS units on there for circa $1000 - just too rich for my blood 8>)

Roger - that's been my plan, have the stock head unit in place in the dash so appears stock (for some reason aftermarket radio's look just god-awful wrong to me in a 928) but hide a small amp with only bluetooth input and a hidden on/off switch to play pandora/spotify, etc through stock speakers. If I get ambitious maybe have cell phone capability as well.

I bought one of these for a friend to put in his 82 - I think i paid around $800 for it from -
http://www.oldautoradio.com
After we got it here we found it does not fit. Did the Bamberg QTS have different din sizes ?
As far as I can tell the correct Bamberg QTS does not have the 2 quick release holes on both sides and should be exactly the same width as the A/C controller.

S4 original radio
Same with the S4 - any pics/model numbers/names of the original radio - can I tell from the option codes what radio should be in there?
the option code reads: '158 Radio "Monterey" - 86 "Reno" - 87' - does that mean Blaupunkt "Reno" for 1986 and "Monterey" for '87 and beyond? What "sqr" does that relate to?
'SQR' is a fragment of the Blaupunkt model number (the Reno is SQR46).
Mark has them.
