Default Steering Rack cleaning / Bench Testing

Rebuilding the steering rack this week.
What does anyone recommend to clean out the shuttle and other parts?
I am a bit leery about brake clean in case it all doesn't flush out.
How about just using tranny fluid?? I have some pitting on the main shaft plating, so I expect that it may not be leak free.

Also looking to not reinvent the wheel, has anyone ever bench tested the unit for leaks? What was the process?

Thinking out loud here.......
I would imagine that I could rig up a mount for the pump / reservoir and drive it with a dewalt drill or washing machine motor with speed regulator etc., to pressurize...This would also help to flush junk out.
Thoughts?

When I did one, I used Brake Cleaner/Mineral Spirits and compressed Air to clean it all up and then used ATF to reassemble/lubricate new seals.

To do a full rebuild it's a tedious job, Testing was done when it was re-installed

After doing it once and given the time it took, the unknown of success, I just go for a rebuilt unit w/ a warranty.

Yup, it is tedious, but not that big of a hassle. I have the car at parade rest, so I think I can do a test out of car fairly easy. In a hold right now for harness build, and possible Tranny removal.

I too will clean and assemble using the same solvents and fluid.

Thnx

Just to make sure you understand, I took mine completely apart, not a partial rebuild.

As for as bench testing, you are dealing w/ some high PSI from the pump, so be very careful.
Also it is easy uninstall and install the rack compared to the effort it takes to rebuild it correctly.

Take you time, keep it all really clean and if your lucky it won't leak and will work after being installed
