I use Lucas synthetic assembly lube, any engine assembly lube will work, you can even use motor oil however the assembly lube tends to stay in place longer until the seal get lubricated from the engines oil once it running.

Perhaps the biggest watch-outs on seal installation include using assembly lube, grease or engine oil on the lip. Be careful not to damage the lip of the seal as it passes over shoulders on the crank nose, as sharp edges will trim the lip and ruin the seal. And you won't find out until it leaks when all is back together. Last but not least, this seal MUST be installed straight in, and sit true to the block and perpendicular to the crank axis. Make a seal installer with a few PVC or ABS pipe bits so you can use the crank bolt to push the seal in square. IIRC there's a tension spring inside the seal that holds the lip in place againats thhe crank; piddling with the seal or mending it risks losing that spring.
The drywall-screw extraction method reduces the risk of getting a tool scratch on the sealing surface on the crank nose. I also use a dedicated seal-and-oring tool, a sharp probe with a 90º bend at the end. Poke it into the seal edge at the access slot, roll the handle and out pops the seal.

I'm having trouble imagining the "seal installer" out of PVC thing. Anyone have a picture of this beast?

I'm not close to the one I made, unfortunately. Take the seal with you to the hardware store and grab a PVC or ABS fitting that is the slightly smaller than the OD. Figure out how long it needs to be total to just clear the end of the crank nose. Glue a cap on the end of a stub of the pipe, and make the whole assy an inch longer inside that just-touches pount on the seal. Drill a hole in the center of the cap big enough for the crank bolt to pass through. Assemble the seal at the block end, then the fittings you put together, and the bolt through the hole in the cap, into the end of the crank. Tighten the bolt, whick should push the seal in nice and square.

That is very clear...great idea, I wouldn't have thought of that!
