Default Hello To All, 928 Calling to Me?? 3rd time?

Hello all! Its been a long, long time. I still keep in touch with my good friend Nicole M, and I remember George S and Bill (god, Bill, you were always a lifesaver) and Steve S. of course, and perhaps there are a lot of others of you out there? Me? You can look up my user name, but I've had 2 928s. A Diamond Blau 88 and a truly lovely Guards Red 89 GT that I bought from John Pohl. As some might remember, that car was stunning, and nearly perfect. I loved her dearly, and the HP bug bit me badly and a roots type supercharger went on and all went to hell. I ended up so frustrated that I put the car back to stock and sold her for what I paid 2 years later.

I fulfilled a dream a couple of years ago with a 997TT. A manual that has over 600HP now, and though I love the car and track it regularly, I have one more spot open in the garage following a recent sale of another car and find myself looking for something special. I've been looking at F Types, and Aston Vantage V12s and what I realized is that they are just modern interpretations of the car I have always loved, the 928.

So, as a HP addict, I did some quick research and see the centrifugal supercharger community is alive...and is it well? Are folks getting 550 to 600HP with reliability? Are the cars holding up to this now that several years have gone by? As lame as it sounds, I'm so addicted to high TQ cars that I would never be able to leave a car stock, just not in my nature.

So, tell me old friends, is it safe to jump into the water with a shark again? Will a supercharger stand up to years of "love" and smoky burnouts?

Well, that's it for now. Still living in Pacifica, still married, kid is 12 now and the dog is 16.5. Been through a number of car projects, most of them have gone better than the roots supercharger project.

No clue where my thousands of posts went from years past...wow. Feel like a loser showing 14. Oh well. Must have been a purge or I changed user ID somehow 12 years ago??

Are the cars holding up to this now that several years have gone by? They are holding up well just like you do!

Hi Seth:

Nice to see you looking into 928s again! As you said not too long ago: "The car is art".

I guess it all comes down to this: You can check out, but you can never leave...

You can go the route of a custom 928 with supercharger, turbo, or stroker (think: easier smog testing) - or you can buy a low mileage 5-speed GTS as an investment. Some think the return on one of these will be sensational.

I hope you find the right toy for your open garage space. Perhaps you'll bring it to Sharks in the Park next time?

PS: Your old user name is "Seth W" (with a space). That's why you don't see your old posts. Perhaps a moderator can merge this and the old accounts.

Ah, that handle shows 628 posts. Just another 300 and you should be drawing nearer baseline........

Welcome back.. Nicole's Hotel California quote is spot on

There's at least 3 active supercharger vendors for centrifugal including of course Murf. Not sure if DR is still selling his twin-screw setup, and too lazy to go check his 928gt.com site.

You should probably also read up on the twin-turbo kit

amazingly amusingly, turbo vs supercharger isn't a blood war these days..)

Gonna need to find that old email and password for that account. To much history to leave it behind.

That eagles quote is spot on. Nice work Nicole.

As pretty as the gts is the 5 speeds are getting quite pricey and given the amount of money I know I am going to throw into this not make sense for me.

Likely an s or s4 or gt with a stick. Ideally one that has mods already.

I just looked at the twin screw. Holy sh$t. I will have to research that and see what the results are on that. That was the dream. I guess I have the money now to see such a project through. So who in the Bay Area works on 928 now?

I do love these cars and always felt sad that the last one ended on a bad note.

Hi Seth: Wonder where "The Seth Car" (that beautiful red 89 GT) is now. Saw it once with its subsequent owner and helped him fix some minor spinout damage. It was still in like new condition after that. Maybe you should look for it again. And yes, I remember the frustration with the Keel blower kit. I had mine as well, but the bugs were eventually worked out with Sharktuning, not available earlier when we installed the kits. My kit lives on in Sonoma on Paul Carver's car which is a scary beast to ride in now. I still have just my original 89, down the last few months after tranny troubles at 280K miles, soon to be back on the road after this rare (for me at least) failure. Anyway, glad to see you here again!

If you want to boost, an S4 with a build date before Dec '87 is the ticket (i.e. 87 or early '88 model year). They've got a deeper piston dish giving lower compression than Jan '88-onwards which helps with boost significantly once you get to the inevitable "more boost" stage.

'87 5-speed with LSD is the ticket
