There are DVD service manuals available, for purchase, that would help you out immensely. Once you purchased the DVD, just print out the info, punch out the three ring binder holes and put them in a nice set of binders.

Well worth the cost and will be very helpful with terminology issues.

It looks like I need to get a CD...explaining techno terminology.

Granted, it was a fifty-fifty chance...CD or DVD...lol.

This discussion now fits in nicely with one of my daughter/father discussions...

"Here, dad...I bought you these DVD's for Christmas."

"Thanks, honey...but I think I've only got a CD player in the van."

"Dad, these are DVD's, movies, not CD's."

"Hmmm, never watched a movie in the van before...don't even remember seeing a screen anywhere."

Long pause and somewhat cross-eyed stare...

"Yeah know what, dad...maybe I'll just take these back and get you some socks."

Yeah, but you didn't call it an 'album'.

Yup - I know the documents that you're referring to. I friend of mine has (a version of) them. PET only works on 16 bit computers. The pdf's may be fine but there's no 'replace the sump gasket' section (that I know at least) in the WSM.

Anyway the big dangly black thing at the bottom of the sump is now on my garage floor.

My new Volvo mounts have arrived but I'm now in waiting mode until I get a few more goodies to deal with my new discoveries along the way. I've also noticed there's a small amount of surface rust on the cross member and retaining brackets for the mounts. The break will give me a good opportunity to rust paint them.

If you're going to do the OPG change, this might be helpful.

Some interesting chit chat there, but not an actual step by step guide. Clearly I've been spoilt by the work of the great John Pirtle!

So perhaps a relevant question for Rennlisters here is whether this thread should just document my journey and leave out how I've handled all the tricky and otherwise largely undocumented bits, or following the more traditional 'Journey + I need help' theme?

The former no doubt works better for regulars who know what they're doing, the latter for the noobs.

I'll see if I can figure out how to run a poll.?1?!

Memorialize all your doings.
Pearls can be gleaned by someone which may be helpful to them.

Personally, my two topics just document what I've been doing. If someone wants to know more, they just ask and I give a more detailed description of my repairs.

In my opinion, detailing every aspect of the journey gets a little overwhelming...as in...doing topics like...remove this bolt, picture, remove that bolt, picture, remove this, picture, etc, etc. There are plenty of those types of topics if you search long enough. Some have been done very well, too, and duplicating them is just not necessary...or worth the time.

Take the #107 project for example, Rob and William just post enough pictures and comments to keep it interesting and enjoyable to follow along with. And, if you have a more extensive question...like how did that come apart...they'd be glad to answer or explain the procedure.

I've been following your topic just to see what you run into or what progress you have made. Not really checking in to see how something is done. Basically, just following along in another 928 owners journey.

Agree.
The wiping off of every bolt doesn't need to scribed, but enough thoughtful comment for the next guy down the line can be helpful.

So while we're waiting for the poll results to come through - let me share with you what has been entertaining my mind.

In 2002 the PO had the following work done (from a reputable mechanic):

Work done includes new engine mounts, fit new cam and crank shaft seals, front seal and separately it shows sump gasket done at same time.

And 5 years of daily driving + 1 year of intermittent driving I received this bill of health from the Porsche dealer:

Oil leaks from... everywhere!

Separately tie rods replaced at 137kms.
Current odometer is approx 225kms.

The poll so far is showing a 2 to 1 majority for "I want to see every little thing". So you asked for it. Here's me cleaning the bolt from Step # 23 in John's motor mount removal program.

Bolt from Step #23

Here's the obligatory "before" and "after" shot of the new and old motor mounts.

I'd expected it to be in a worse state (given some other photos I'd seen). That said the engine was low enough to fail the 'rotate on ignition' test. I'm also looking for the additional 10 HP you get for installing them. (okay, that may be wishful thinking).
