New Windshield.
Drove into the sun the other day, and my windshield sparkled like a diamond. I could not see a thing. O looked at the windshield, and there are a thousand little pits. Looks like I will have to replace my windshield. I tried to polish it some with the groit's product, but I can still see the scratches and pits. So looks like I can not polish these puppies out.
So my question, is has anyone replaced their windshield. Do you have experience with safelite. Is there a good source for a quality windshield?
thanks for the help.

I heard one horror story from a friend about safelite installing a windshield on his 928. They did it in his work parking lot. He came out and his windshield trim was bent to hell and stuck back on like nothing happened. He was not satisfied with the job nor the customer service afterwards (if I properly recall).

for most re fitments of windshields,
you should figure on replacing the trim that runs across the top of the window, this trim is difficult to remove without bending it

Call around locally and ask for prices and the maker of the windshield.
Complaints or no, this is a good job to have done by a professional. I got a windshield for cheap from RockAuto (on a whim, really) and put it in myself. Not a terrible ob but the right tools and some know-how would go a long way.

You have an '88, does it have the radio antenna in the windshield? (A very fine wire around the right half of the windshield). Those are available but only from Porsche, for around $1250 list. (Those are also the only factory windshields that Porsche has available-- they have stock under the non-antenna part# but is the same windshield, with antenna). The non-antenna version is generally available and that's what most folks replace it with (plus some sort of hidden antenna).
The supplier for Porsche is Sigla, hard to find but available. I believe this is what Roger supplies but the last time we checked he was no longer shipping windshields due to breakage. Our source for the last few windshields has been Gabe at Windshield Expo in Anaheim, very experienced and able to get the correct glass without drama.
Much more common is glass from China, some is apparently good and some not-so-good. I don't know how you would determine which is which.
Stan is correct that it is very difficult to remove the top trim without bending it. It can be done but takes time and patience, and knowing where the clips are-- three items which are in short supply with most glass installers.
It is also very hard to ship a new top trim to anywhere without getting it getting bent. My suggestion is to buy it through your local friendly dealer and pick it up in person, rejecting it if bent. Cost is around $141 list. Ouch.
So revisiting the top trim, here's my suggestion: Lay a strip of masking tape across the windshield just below the trim, and mark the location of each clip. Then tell your glass installer that there is a extra $50 for him if he doesn't bend the trim.
Here's a picture of the clips (yes, they have teeth), showing how I measured them. I found clips at 2.5", 4.5", 10", 16.87", 23.75", 30.75", 37.75", 43.25", 45.25" but your car will be different, so use this information for entertainment purposes only. Slide a thin piece of stiff plastic (a strip cut from one of your burned-out credit-cards) under the trim and slide it along to find the clips, and mark the tape accordingly.

I had the installer mark uses. He was kind enough to drive up to my house in the South Bay. I removed all the trim and parts. He did the windshield and rear hatch. Great glass and service.

I ordered from safelite before. They took the order in but wouldn't deliver. They said they didn't have it. Just put an order in with glassrack.com. I'll update once it's in. It was $421 with shipping.

RockAuto will send a green-band windshield tht's likely Chinese for $133 plus $166 shipping. Under $300 for the windshield. I recall getting it for like $75 shipping but the first one arrived cracked in the corner. Seems they adjusted to a new shipment method or cost to cover that.
