Default Headlight won't stay on....

Turned on the headlight, everything on, 10 seconds later, the passenger side headlight goes off, turn it off and on and it stays off but if i turn it off completely ( popped down) and pop back up, it comes back on but 10 seconds later, it goes off again .....any idea? Wires? Bulb? Thanks

Possibly a break in the wiring - the wiring has to articulate - or possibly just a connection at the bulbholder or even inside the sealed beam unit (if original style still used) that fails as it heats up. You will need to dig in...

Suggest you remove the pod cover (easy - 3 screws), turn the lights on and monitor the voltage at the lamp pins. when the Lamp goes out - do you lose voltage on the pins? if yes flex the bulb wires you can access and see if that can bring it back on...

If you still have voltage - it seems likely you need a new sealed beam unit - or upgrade to better lighting anyway - like 7" H4's - not all that expensive, and then failures are just a bulb change in future.

The headlight relay drives both L&R lights from a single contact set for on/off high/low - so if one side works OK it isn't that. The fuses are separate from side to side & Hi/Lo, but they aren't likely to be affected by up/down movements of the pod as noted here - so I'd say an unlikely culprit here, always worth looking at fuse conditions though...

It would be interesting here to the leave the lamps on high beam and see if you get the same effect then?

+1 regarding the connection at the bulb holder. Don't know if MY84 has the same bulb holder connection as the later cars, but if so, that was the cause of the same symptom with the passenger headlight on mine.

Cleaned the connection (and had to re-seat it a few times) to get it right. It's worth checking anyway.

It was the low beam on mine as well. Same symptom; it would come on for maybe five seconds, then go out. High beam and flash worked.

Cars earlier than S4's have different more robust connectors. Still a possibility but a better connector configuration to start with.

brown is ground wire so make sure it does have continuity to ground it should.

if your inspection of the connectors doesn't show any results

NOTE to inspect the wires you will need to remove the wheel and the front block off plate

look at the harness under the headlamp where it is clamped to the chassis,
this is a flex pinch point and it is common for the wires to get cut from the metal clamp ,
turn the lights on and work the wires at the clamp see if the bulb stays lit.

If high beam works, the ground is fine and the problem is with yellow or white, cannot recall which is high vs low and don't have book in front of me.

Again, check/clean the fuses. You have an earlier car if my memory serves, which is more prone to fuse problems.....
