Later fender liners in earlier car
Can the later, "half-barrel" fender liners be fit to an earlier ('80) car? I'm especially interested in the fronts.
I see in the PET that it calls for 34 screws to hold the 4 liners. That's 7 or 8 per liner. Do those use the same points as the early flat liners? Drill some holes and figure it out?
I'm wondering because when tracking the car the sticky tires have been throwing pebbles up into the fender and creating damage on the fenders from below. I've done the cosmetic work in the paint and added some rubber undercoating below but the full liners would be a better solution.

it may be a couple of weeks till William's '78 comes back from paint, but I have a spare pair of the later front liners, and can do a test fit.

I'm not sure what Rob is going to find in regard to fitting the full front wheel well liners into the earlier cars; and I don't even know when they first appeared from the factory in the later ones; perhaps with the 87? I am pretty sure that there is going to be one stud mounting point missing from the earlier cars on each side, and there is likely to be missing holes too. I have been accumulating some of the front liners myself with this retrofit to my earlier cars in mind but have just not gotten around to it.
As to the rears, I know quite a bit more. The Factory did not put full rear liners in the 928 until 91. With those they put two additional mounting points on each side at the very top of the wheel wells on hat sections welded to the body. Those two mounting points are not in the earlier cars. For the cars from 87 on I think the other mounting points are the same. I am not yet sure about the other mounting points in the 78 to 86 cars, but I think they are also the same with the exception of the two bottom rear points that are associated with the inner fender brace that holds the front bottom corner of the rear bumper cover to the front rear bottom corner of the rear wheel arch. That brace is not needed in the earlier cars because the bumper cover does not come that far forward.
At this point I can still form and provide a set of full rear Wheel Well Liners for the GTS cars, including brackets to mount to all the existing mounting points. I also can form the full Liners for all the earlier cars, except I still have not devised a mounting bracket for the upper rear of the right liner. There might be some place to fasten it to the car back there, but I just haven't figured that out yet. When I do, I can provide full wheel well liners for the 87 thru 90 928s. Then for the carlier cars without the rear bumper bracket described above I will need to devise something to hold the rear bottom of the liners in place, on both sides. At that point I am pretty sure that my form for the earlier liners will be suitable for all of the cars before the GTS.

The full front liners were fitted in 85 to both 16v and 32v cars - so yes they will fit the earlier cars.
The left has a molding to go around the ABS but that will not make any difference.
IIRC it picks up the same points for the vertical front and rear splash shields fitted to the pre-85 cars.
Missing a couple of points at the top but it is rigid enough to stay in place without them.

Yes, I've test fitted 85 to 84. Seemed to be workable. Beauty of those early liners is the material of construction is pliable even today, no degradation!
