Default How can a shop miss this?

I'm helping out a local fellow, who's car just had the timing belt and water pump done at a local indy. They told him his oil pan was leaking, which was true. But how they ignored this is beyond words.

Oil pump was leaking like a mother f#%ker.

And cam gears need re-coating.

Complete hacks.

Are those steel? They look like ones (square tooth) from 82(?) or earlier. But as to missing the leak.....no telling maybe lazy or not wanting that type work.

Yes they are all steel, cams and oil gear.

I put a straight edge on them and they don't have any major dips in them. But there is some slight pitting.

I'm familiar with the need to have the coating intact on the later aluminum gears. But on steel?

I have a local shop that does molly coatings. It's only about $80.

No coating on those gears. Make sure the crank drive gear and the oil pump gear look nice like those and are flat. If so, clean those gears, buy a factory cam belt, and forget them.

I'm unclear on the outrage.

Thanks Greg, yes the other gears are the same so will go back in. The belt is new.

It was just that they did not tend to the leak. The car is s concours winning 78 and the owner has no issue fixing what needs to be fixed. Actually the shop is the one that got the short end of the stick as they could have easily made more money fixing several items on it.

Well we aren't privy to what the owner told the shop to do. If he said 'replace the timing belt and the water pump' then that's what they did. Pretty sure the shop knew about the leaking pump, but they weren't told to exchange that. Who knows what the shop wants to get into?

I just got a bill for work on my non-928 and the shop did about $240 of work not authorized. I was pretty pissed. They didn't call, just did the work and expected me to pay for it. I said ok, so where's the old parts you took out? When they couldn't come up with the old parts, I told them they weren't getting paid. It was not a fun time.

did the owner provide the parts ?? If so the shop would not have wanted to wait on the additional seals plus chasing oil leaks on a 37 year old engine is not a good bet if you do seals hit or miss as the shop then owns any and all oil leaks....

Like the others said, it all depends on what the Shop was told to do.
Your adding hours and more than likely the parts that were needed were not "on-hand" to do the Oil Pump seals, and as the plastic backing plate needs to be removed to access it, that Crank gear can take some time too.

However once it was apart and if they knew what they were looking at, the customer should have been called.

As I see it, it's never just a T-Belt and WP & Tensioner, it's all rotating bits and seals or why bother.

I know the owner of the car and he does not bock at fixing anything or bringing it to concourse condition. The shop lost some revenue there.

A reputable shop should have made a call, especially on a car of this caliber. When you are this far in, there is little effort and parts cost to seal this up. The shop in question completely messed up another Rennlisters car last year, so to see this doesn't surprise me at all.

Adam.......remember the rag in the oil pan? They tried to seal the leak from the inside. Now it all starts to make sense.
