My car is making a loud humming noise under the hood. It seems to be coming from the air pump area. It is also running very bad. It is sluggish at low RPM/speed. Any suggestions?

Based on your limited description, my guess is that there is a swarm of bees nesting in the intake.

That would explain the humming and the decreased performance.

Pizza: we need more info....does the noise change depending on engine rpm? What have you checked already? Is does it idle ok? Does it stall? Does it sputter?

Randy is so funny!!! Ha Ha!! I swapped out MAF's and I think that did it. My MAF was just rebuilt though. It idled high (900) and noise stayed the same, it didn't stall or sputter. It just didn't perform and my mileage was down to 10 mpg. I will drive it a while today and make sure it was the MAF before I contact John. Thanks

Pizza, MAFs don't normaly cause humming noises... Bad proformance, yes, poor gas milage, vacuum leaks, yes, humming noises, no.

Expecaly not humming noises located in the air pump area.

I wouldn't bet it's the MAF...
