Factory Targa
Got this book in mail today:
Some stuff in it which I don't recall hearing before. Factory did 1:1 size model of 928 Targa in around 1976. Hans-Georg Kasten (who designed twin arm rear wiper) etc took it wind tunnel and were very surprised. They knew stock OB design had very bad Cd number but didn't at the time know why that is. When they took Targa to the tunnel result was much better. Kasten who took result papers back to design department and put them into Lapine's desk while he was away. Half hour later Lapine came back and said "What happened, what happened?" At the time they didn't understand very well what caused it. Little later when they first put S rear spoiler to wind tunnel they understood what was going on. Reason is low pressure from airflow staying on rear window when nothing is breaking it off.
Other interesting info I have noticed so far. Manual gearbox was designed by but manufactured by Zahnrad Werk Neuenstein (ZWN), subsidiary of Getrag. Good reason to get automatic gearbox from Mercedes was design cost. At the time automatic design budget was around 60 million DEM's. Total development for 928 was only 10 million.
Book is not perfect and has it's share of errors. But it's good addition since there aren't that many 928 books around.

So for the record ...
The 5 speed manual is the only 100% designed 928 and all "Roger " box cars are 50/50 Porsche/Mercedes.
Well folks there you have it, the real explanation for the difference in value
