Default Circlip in Oil Seperator

In the process of putting things back together under the hood, and was doing some clean-up on the oil separator.

In doing so, I heard a rattle inside and found a circlip sitting on the bottom. It's clearly not attached to anything.

So:

1. Is there a circlip typically inside the separator?
2. I'm assuming I should pull it out with some thin-nosed pliers.
3. Anything else to consider?

Use a magnet to pick it up.

It is too big to pull out with a magnet in a single piece, so I cut it in two from the bottom hole and then pulled the two pieces out with the magnet.

Still makes me wonder how the hell it got in there in the first place....

If that were the case, it would have had a ways to travel to the separator (assuming there is such a travel line) and I can't find any point of ingress into the separator that would support the size of the circlip.

Hmmmm.....928 Mysteries...
