Frank, your comments are really an important and potentially life-saving reminder to me.
As I have my 928 mostly in boxes right now, your experience reminds me that I need to be
very careful and precise as I re-assemble and try to start her back up eventually.
I can just imagine myself rushing through the final stages of assembly and neglecting to triple-check a fuel line, etc etc.
Thanks for the reality check.

Thanks for the kind words guys. Everyone has told me the same thing, at least you walked away unharmed and no one else was hurt.
I was lucky ( smart? Not likely) enough to have agreed to value so that is some comfort. Amazing how hot the fire was, actually melted the hood.

I've been in the garage doing an inventory of spare parts, many brand new so I will be posting soon. Hopefully some of the S Ontario guys can gain from my loss

Al-
I can't imagine watching all that work and effort over 15 years go up in smoke... Are you going to get another one?

Thanks again. Not sure what I will do next, I retired in May so time is not an issue. My wife has a '13 RDX that she says she is keeping and I have a '13 TL that has been driven about 1000 km in the last 5 months so I may sell that and look for another toy.....always liked the BMW Z4.....any words of wisdom or experience with them?

What was the cause of the fire - old fuel lines?

Really unfortunate, but glad no personal injuries occurred.
Please post what may have been the cause. You mentioned it was running rough, think an injector was stuck open? Or leaky fuel line as many have speculated?

I think leaky fuel line, I thought I had replaced them all within last 10 years but will check.....the closest I can describe is it was like a carburetor car with a stick float in my past experience.

So sorry to hear of this, I had a fire a couple of months ago so I know how it scares the crap out of you. I was able to rebuild my engine bay to be better then it was before, but that was only because mine went up in my driveway and I was able to react and extinguish very quickly.

If the car wasn't running right due to a fuel leak, when you popped the hood the first time it should have been immediately noticeable. Maybe there was a bad electrical short that was causing the running issue and caused the fire to break out.

I hope you receive a fair settlement and are able to move on. Z4's are awesome machines, a friend of mine has one and the 3.0 BMW I6 is virtually bullet proof.

So sorry to hear and see, however this can happen to ANY car, just more so on one's that are 20 to 30 years old.

Glad to hear no one was injured and you were covered, build another

Dave
