The OP's placement would not work for me and I think as others have commented it's too shallow to hold anything upright under braking or spirited driving.

As for the Ash Tray Idea, I believe that would also be in the way of Shifting, even placing an Auto in Park.

If you must have a cup holder, than the side Console mount or the side /seat slip in unit would be my first and second choice.
I just place a bottle of water behind the drivers seat and do a reach around

Yeah, that's a significant consideration, obviously. I did a quick orientation test-fit using the insert from my Cayenne and it seemed like it would work without interfering with the shifter (I have a Rogerbox). Just a concept at this point, we'll see how it goes.

Alan, I've been looking for that dual cup holder for a couple years. IIRC, it comes from the VW Vanogan and has a separate base for VW's typical floor mount. None of the VW aftermarket people seem to have it, so if you know of a source................I'm in for one all day! BTW, I had an Audi TT that had cup holders mounted on the rear tunnel in a configuration similar to the OP's. What a PITA!

A custom item?
Might ask Petervik for one OVAL hole to fit a half-pint bottle of gin.

I don't believe there is enough room for a setup like that. Heck, when the car is in park...I can barely knock the ashes off my cigar in the ashtray...it's that close.

I'm going to look into the setup Alan has. Looks best for drivers and riders needs.

Brian.

The VW cupholder that Alan displays is a VW accessory item, available at dealers and once in a while aftermarket. There was a Transporter-themed site that carried them for a while, but the cost was escalating pretty fast from VW. They were fitted to late 1980's Passat cars as accessories. A friend who was a factory service rep for VW/Audi at the time graciously supplied mine. Note that Carl at Motorsports carried them for a while too. Ping him and see if he still has them.

That's certainly a unique solution.

I vote for a casetteplayer insert that holds the cupholder. At least this works as long as there is a radio with casetteplayer in the car.

I don't think Guru, the OP, asked for or wants anything else. He is happy with his solution, so let him enjoy.
Good luck,
Dave

That's why I need a cupholder! I use one of these:
