My stock lid was not in very good shape, so I replaced it with an aftermarket lid that is taller. I don't think it increased useful storage area much, as the extra height is in the lid, but it did put the lid closer to where my elbow likes to rest. For sure, drinks in that area would be in my way.

I found your tint solution..

Here's pics of larger lids that are available. Made by Petervik who is known here too. Got mine from him. Made very well. Gives potential space for a larger item if I were to put one in the center bin, but I really wanted for my arm sits much more comfortably on long drives. Note pic of original vs his.

Why don't you try buying some rubber edge banding in bulk length and cut it to fit your opening. This kind of stuff is how Porsche bands the openings in their GT3 $4000-$8000 Recaro racing seats where the 5 point harness comes in from the bottom of the seat.

I would have two problems with that cup holder. My elbow would always be getting wet, unless I had my dog in the back seat, they my drinks would be empty.

For every reason that can be conceived, that is not a good idea for a cup holder.
Guru, get a new lid and use the Search function for cupholders. Do something else.

Just a random creative idea if you want to hold two drinks, look like a stock install, and disappear when not needed. I haven't tried this, but what if you opened the center arm rest hatch, and inside create an insert out of wood or other substrate that would hold the bottom of two cups. Next, create a foldout that stores in the lid that holds the upper portion of the cups. If you could lock the lid into the vertical position and the foldout into the horizontal position, you may have a modern use for the cassette holder.

However right how I like my folding cup holder, so no modifications any time soon.

Get a cup-holder that doesn't interfere with driving, is easy to reach, folds away nicely when not in use and allows your drink to stay in place when cornering the way the car is supposed to...

I really like that Petervik lid!
It's thicker, so when I cut the holes in it my Bud bottle will have more support.
Thanks.

Guru,
Email Petervik when you order and ask him if he would make the holes and finish them nicely. He's a very nice Porsche guy. If you want the hole(s) for a specific type of bottle or can, he can do that for you (probably). If he can/would, his finished job would be clean.

Since you're already committed to this option, I'd look for...or make...something that extends the height of the cup holder. Seems pretty shallow as it is. The location seems odd, too. It's almost behind the drivers elbow and would hinder a fluid movement when retrieving a beverage. I could see several beverages being spilled if I applied this option to my car. Granted, I'm 6'4"...so its tight in there anyway...lol.

Good luck finishing your project.

Brian.

I'm thinking of getting a spare center console and modding in a cupholder where the ashtray is. I think there's enough room for a two-cup running left-right.
