Default Oh the horror...another TB/WP sob story

Well! I knew the WP was shot but this was quite a disgusting surprise. Good news is that even though there was a good 1.5 mm play in the WP shaft, the impeller seems to not have contacted the block. I don't know how to clean this mess up.
Next problem, the crankshaft timing gear will not "slide off" as it should. I've already bent the rear concave timing belt guide trying to get some leverage and pry it off. Any tips from fellow Rennlisters?

For either crank gear or harmonic balancer, I use one "leg" of a large gear puller. Just slip it behind a secure area and seat it well against the gear. I then use a hammer and slide the shaft of the hammer along the length of the puller "leg". Not a lot of torque, but it always gets the ball rolling as far as the gear or the balancer coming off.

Crank gear. Harmonic balancer and all of the accessory pulleys came off easily.

Jeez, did somebody put some Tang in the coolant? If this were an iron block, I would say look at the rust. You may need to do several flushes to clean that up.

Thanks john! Worked like a charm, don't think I would have ever thought about using the gear puller quite like that.

I know Ed! The PO just kept putting straight water into the car because it was pissing it out the WP shaft almost as fast as he put it in. That's all from the steel impeller. I hope I can get a few months down the road with the new Dex-Cool 50/50 before I have to swap it all out again. The temp gauge will tell the story.

I believe the saying is: Necessity is the mother of invention.

Glad it worked out for you. I've spent way more time than I care to think about trying to get stubborn harmonic balancers and crank gears off before I figured out how to utilize this.

ROTFLMAO. Don, don't forget for a minute that I know you won't be at Third Coast this year......unless something has changed and you really WILL be there????

I can only hope that this little tip helps somebody. Thanks for the offer

Ah, that's right, I won't be there... Make sure and remind me next year.

You're tip is really a good one. I just hope I remember it next time I'm tearing into one of my cars.

I lift my radiator out when doing a belt change, scares me to see a hammer moving around that close by!

In case you haven't done your research on coolant for the 928, check out this link for starters:

https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...8-coolant.html

It is suggested that DEX-COOL should NOT be used, unless it's already in there and you don't want to bother flushing it thoroughly and you're confident in tempting fate

Disclaimer: I make no claim as to the accuracy of the statements contained in the above link, but I trust the general consensus.

Cheers,
Brian

This sounds like a very useful tip, but I can't work out what's going on with the hammer. Squinting at the photo below leaves me no wiser. Please can you explain for this slow guy? Thanks!

Tapping or rapping the flange on the gear puller leg whilst the other end was hooked behind the gear gave enough force to slide the gear off the shaft.

Thanks for that. I think you need to be careful with the harmonic balancer not to damage the bond between the outer metal ring and the rubber which absorbs vibrations
