Hi, I am trying to remove the radiator on my '87 s4 auto. What size spanners do I need to undo the connections for the transmission cooler?
Also, what are the pipes connected on the right hand side of the radiator, below the water inlet?
Thanks

No probs..depending what you find, you may need to grind down the ends to be narrower and fit between each other right.
You may find 3 come apart great..and the 4th make you wonder if it was welded.

Connections that you are pointing to on the left (port side, driver's side on US cars) of the radiator are engine oil cooling hoses. The connections on the right (other) side are for the automatic transmission.
I have a set of relatively ancient AC system connection wrenches that work perfectly for these connections. Bad news is that they are no longer made. Follow Jeff's guidance on grinding a pair of 'standard' spanners, or search out a set of thin "service wrenches".
It's imperative that you carefully counter-hold the fitting as you try to loosen the nut. The connections are "bulkhead" connections through the radiator tank, sealed with an o-ring against the plastic tank. They connect to mini aluminum heat exhangers in the tanks, where excessive force applied will break the ends off the exchangers. Avoid even small movements of the fittings to maintain the seal that the o-ring forms.

Found these at my local trade tool supplier. Brand is "Forged". Not a big name, not plastic.
Fitted and worked a treat.
All four fittings is undone. The fans are off
but I am not looking forward to refitting it.
Radiator is out and I have an amazing new collection of leaves, bugs, dirt and unknowns,
Now to figure out why the bottom connectors leaked oil - both engine and gearbox cooler.
