When I changed the oil from 5/30 to 20//50 at first it looked almost milky like water in the oil but it did not separate how water does. This is when I notice just a very slight hint of a metallic sheen. The engine developed this knocking noise after driving it for about 5 hours. At first I thought it was possible broken valve spring but now maybe more that this. I will get over to GB today.

The 100º+ SoCal temps, the long pull over the grapevine on I-5, and the knocking noise would steer me to Stan's oil drip test, then on to cutting the oil filter open to see what lurks in the pleats of the media. You description of changing recently from too-thin oil and the discoloration of that old oil, would point me towards bearing damage due to oil starvation. Sorry that this is not a very happy initial speculation. GB is the man to see on this stuff. You'll know fairly quickly what you are facing. Good luck!

Doesn't "milky oil" suggest mixing with coolant?

Oil filter dissection tells you very quickly if the engine should even be run....it's the mechanical equivalent of going to the doctor and taking an x-ray picture.

I thought that they were left over rose pedals from the arrival of your new sweetheart.

I raced sports cars for 25 years and when in this situation, my enthusiasm does not wane. This car is a keeper and it's an investment grade 928, with near perfect interior. I have every record since it was first sold included a few speeding tickets the PO left in the file. Even if Greg Brown has to rebuild the motor, at the end of the day I will have a near perfect 928 done right. If Porsche built 928's today I would then consider buying a new one.

That makes me very happy to hear, Van! I was a little afraid that you might not have the fortitude for that car and its challenges. I'm glad it's someone like you that won the auction...

Chin up!

And you guys quit harping on Vanster. No reason to get wound up about anything at this point.

Greg shoots straight and will tell it like it is. Until then, it's all speculation. If nothing else, there will be a healthy discussion over drinks this weekend. And it's quite possible that Mark has a ready-to-drop-in something.

Is Rob R's 86.5 stroker engine still sitting down there at Greg's?
