Jack-
Poor boy. I think you need to contact 928 International or Devek or 928 Specialists for some advice. Why do you think your head is cracked?
For what it is worth...welding aluminum castings is not hard. Getting it correct is another matter.
Best of luck!

You can weld that puppy but then you'd have to machine it.
Could end up with less compression after weld build-up and machining -not good-. Or more compression after machining -bad-.
New cylinder heads are going for right at $1000.00, used $500.00 at
928 INT'L, They might cut you a better deal if you call, touch base with all of the Big Three as well as Ebay parts 928 OC and the Renn classified's.
If you do buy the head, (I'm not sure if they are bare or complete so make sure before you buy) you are saving a good bit on weld up and machining for a iffy repair. If you are having someone do the work you will be better off , financially as well as quality of work, with a straight forward in and out fix with the head ready to go on.
Should be some help in the archives if you do the work yourself.
You know anyone over on Butter Oak?

Jack, all I can offer is sympathy about your block but moreso about your dog - that's never an easy thing to have to do as any devoted pet owner can attest. I guess you just focus on all of the good years.

Those heads are nice but I'm not sure what else you would need as
the 80' - 82' MY heads are for the 4.5L and the 83' - 84' MY are for the 4.7L
they might be cammed differently and have fuel/ignition mapping changes.
Ask the Guru's as I don't know for sure other than the head part numbers are definitely different.
Looks like a good buy for someone though.
Hey looks like a good time for some valley cleaning while you have that head off.
Since the Pass.side is off once you pull the intake tubes, filter and box with the Air Flow Meter there is a lot of room to work with.
You can get at the vacuum lines that run under the Intake Manifold, too.
Order new connectors and make some new lines. You won't regret it and its extremely cheap preventative maintenance.
I checked all of mine out today working from the drivers side.
Might as well do a good clean up on the AFM you probably have a little oil accumulated there, check the flapper from the air cleaner bottom side or just remove the additional four screws to separate and really clean. I used
WD 40 to loosen things up, used a toothbrush, blew all the junk out with Carb. cleaner, then another light coat of WD 40. I did that two years ago as a pre-test baseline when the K&N filter issue was going hot and heavy.
When I pulled it today there was just a dab of oil(breather/smog pump?) and it was absolutely dust free, factory clean -shined-. I'm staying with the K&N as I don't have the Hot Wire coating issues of the later models which is a genuine concern. Don't forget to clean the now accessable firewall, and all that stuff up on the windshield motor deck.
Good luck on the heads.
Sorry you can't make the 3rd Coast Event. Maybe next time.
OR,
See if one of the Houston crowd is rolling solo and come on over with them.
Hell from Spring you only have to drop south to 280 and roll.

Drive the Fire Truck, rent a Yugo, borrow a bike. Resistance is Futile! Honestly, I understand, head issues kept me from making it last year. If I was a little farther along on the Euro, I would have a couple of US heads for sale, but you need one now.

Jack,
A man called me yesterday, he has a complete 928 engine for sale and has had for a long time. The engine is disassembled, one of the cylinders has a scratch, but the heads are complete overhauled and ready for use.
He started years ago with a price of 2000 US$ now he is down to 400 US$
I think it is a 84 Euro, not sure, can check if you want
Regards from Erik in Denmark

I had an 83S 5 speed USA 4.7L that the drivers side head cracked and leaked coolant one month after I bought it. I ordered another used head from 928Intl and proceded to have the gaskets replaced and 'new' head installed. Upon removal on the passenger side head, the good one, we discovered that that head had been replaced in the past. The bad news was that it was from a 4.5L car. Different chamber design and all. This all happened to me at 52K miles. Both heads cracked before 53K miles. Another call to 928Intl and we were on our way.
CS Mo has the car now......good luck CS.
