My 928 always produced a sort of "grinding" sound coming from the rear. The grinding follows the speed (more grinds at higher speeds and vice versa). I always thought it came from a wheel bearing but I had a listen with the car jacked up a year ago and then we established it comes from the differential at the driver's side. I was thinking about replacing the differential bearing and now that the gas-tank is out there's workable space to do it. I've opened up the transmission case and it seems there's some play on the diff. Is this too much play and the cause of grinding? Or should I replace the bearing anyway?
Any thoughts please?
Thanx for the reply Greg. Today I've found the time to examine the bearing on the left side. I can see a groove but I can't feel it. Not sure what it looks like on the inside though.
Replacing them doesn't seem to be too hard a job. Is this the right part. N° btw:
