won't crank hot

My 78 wont crank hot. I have headers so the heat is problematic. The starter is new and now wont start cold. I have insulated the starter, it only delayed the time it took for the starter to soak up heat and takes that much longer for it to cool down. I doubt i'm the only one with with headers and this problem. Is it possible the starter could be marginal? thanks

Check your main engine grounds. Clean and reinstall.
Also, check you main power cable from the battery to the starter.
The Stepson was turning over extremely slow and then wouldn't turn over at all. All my electrical options worked, but there wasn't enough amps to move the starter and consequently the engine. I replaced the original main power cable with a 13' piece of #0 welding lead I bought from a welding supply. I had the welding supply crimp on the end that goes to the starter. Cost me $45 total. The car now turns over like it has a high-torque starter on it.
But yes, it could be your starter.

First, let's assume that when the car won't start that you are able to rotate the motor with a 27mm with the normal level of resistance.
New starter won't start when hot or cold. So.... power supply issue, or exciter wire issue. Most likely.
When it won't start does it crank slowely? Or not at all? As in nothing, nada, no sound at all, from the starter?

the ONLY factor that causes this problem is heat. Cranks at full power when it has cooled off. At least until now, wont crank at all. I've fooled with the cables "all the cables" I plan or replacing the starter but i have little faith this will fix hot crank problems

I have one of 928MS High-torque starters in my '79 and it turns over extremely well. If you are going to replace the starter, recommend this one highly.

and the question here being, where is the heat coming from? Normal engine temps, or, and hopefully you have already eliminated this and I just missed it, TBF?

Check the grounds and connectors in the spare tire well. My 86.5 would not start hot - chased it down to frayed wires going into one of the connectors back there.

I've had this issue for ages and could never figure out why in my 81. I went through 3 starters and all had the same issue.
You would hear the usual clunk of the solenoid engaging but the starter wouldn't spin unless you whacked it while the ignition was engaged.
But now I have other things to fix now that the torque converter killed itself.
Good luck on fixing any issue you have in the future.
