Is this out of the norm?

Where does your battery ground strap go....? ....?
I would always get the right battery that fits properly (Group 49 for your car) - AND bolt it down! - then no rubber is needed.

already done. The rubber is enough to lock it in place when the hatch is closed and locked. The ground strap bolts to a relief on the inside of the battery box, not up and under the toolkit cover.

Using the lid as a retention mechanism is also far from ideal. Batteries are very heavy (this one more than most?), vertical & lateral movement of the car can stress the lid and only a small bit of aged plastic locks the lid... If you have a spare bolted down - you have a secondary line of defence protecting the lock - if not ...

I'd be worried about a ground connection like that - it is exposed to a quite corrosive environment - certainly from the inside and likely from the outside too, the metal is quite thin and not plated for the connection. It also means that in an emergency you now have to dig down to the battery box to perform a battery disconnect - far from ideal - especially with a spare bolted in place.

There is a 3/16" u shaped plate that is threaded to receive the ground strap inside the well. It actually is a heavier connection than the factory design with the wing nut. It might have been the hold down mount, but has been that way (and very secure) since I bought the car in 97. I don't think there will be a problem and one would have to see it in person to understand why I feel this way. If I go off-roading, I could see the possibility of the battery wanting to move vertically, but it has no room whatsoever to move laterally and is very heavy as noted. I figure with my AC equipment removed and my heavy battery, I probably achieved the 50/50 weight distribution! I will keep you all informed as to how it works out.
