1978 5sp #107 just arrived - aka the restoration of Minerva
#451
Did you get the same arms back or just the same stamps?
#452
Stickers - The ones on the Radiator. I have the shell sticker on the plastic HVAC area cover - is there another sticker that goes there?
I can't even imagine where the other stickers go.

I was thrilled that Mark made it happen that the same control arms and steering rack could be rebuilt and reunited with the car as it was originally. I believe even with all the extra shipping costs that it was cheaper than new replacements, but I would have done it anyway so just a bonus.
We also found a great resource to unseal, refurb, and return the original power booster for the brakes, and that saved many hundreds of $ on top of putting the original back in perfect order.
As for the H4s, I understand the early cars had no observation dimples but are all but unobtanium. The H4s I got were hard enough to source, my understanding is Bosch has sold its headlight division to an Italian company who promptly ceased production of certain lines including the 8" H4s. If that info is correct, I recommend getting yours if a replacement is in your future, fyi.
I was told they were unavailable, but once again Mark Anderson tracked down a brand new pair, thank you 928 Intn'l! (I think I am gonna need a payment plan or start selling kidneys, lol!)

did I happen to mention that the finished, newly painted and polished body is coming home today? Stay tuned for pics later...
Official Christmas gift color is all Minerva this year at my house!

It makes me wonder whether they could also rebuild the unobtanium front swaybar links with ball joints that don't exist in PET but are present on Minerva. I went through Mark's box of 78-86.0 links, but he didn't have any. Tom suggested maybe they could rebuild these (?) One is good, but one is toast, lots of play in the joint:
Also, tried taking pictures of my stickers last night...with our tablet and it didn't go well at all. Gas door and a couple under the hood are in pretty good shape, but unfortunately a couple of the others are lacking words. Once you mention high resolution...I knew I'd be in trouble...lol. However, I tried...and my wife, now, questions my sanity...since it was after midnight when I went back out into the garage for the photo shoot.
I hope someday in the future you make all of your pictures available, it would be like the wholy grail of 78 information for restorations.
Brian.

Awright, holidays are over. William and I tag-teamed today and got a bunch of stuff cleaned and organized.
William spent about 6 hours knocking out every exterior light, going through each, cleaning and checking contacts.
Finished product:
Apparently the rear license plate lamp lenses crack, letting all sorts of schmutz in. Corrosion:
Little bead blast, little elbow grease, little scratch brush, and vwallah:
William fell in love with the scratch brush, so he got the CE panel to detail.
Side markers, 3rd quarter of 1977:
He then moved onto all the seals and rubber- soapy hot water, some Simple Green, dry, and then Gummi-Pflege:
Meanwhile, I was cleaning and dismantling everything that hasn't otherwise been cleaned or dismantled:
Circlips out of the rear hubs:
Pushing out the bearings:
Throttle body Medusa, dirty:
Clean Medusa:
Cleanish exhaust resonator:
Stripping bits for the paint-it-black pile:
Cleaning battery ground cable, made by Reinshagen
Date code madness:
Expansion valve- 35th week of 77:
Steering column guibo (hard as rock, it's being replaced):
Fuel vapor overflow tank, 10/77:

Looking good.
Were you able to salvage the quarter window glass rubbers...or are those new.
And, are you guys working in the kitchen? Such exercises would mean certain death by unnatural causes around here.
Also, is that the original exhaust system?
Brian.

The rear quarter window seals are in great shape and are very pliable- significantly better than the rest of the seals. Which begs whether they're original or not. My vote is not. But they're going back on the car.
Tintectomy after soaking in Windex for 24 hours:
Removal:
Removed. Still some baseline coloration to the glass.

Finally time to post the delivery pics from the paint shop. Sorry for the delay.
Body in my garage for now while we need the space for reassembly prep/staging at Rob's. I can't stop looking at it.

Yes it is! Picked up the rebuilt brake booster today.
So many subplots on this restoration journey. Through an experienced BMW restoration friend, was referred to an Upland company that only rebuilds and tests original brake boosters for vintage cars of all types. Just another chance to reunite an original factory assembled part in perfect working order.
Turned it around in less than 3 weeks, and at the risk of jinxing it, a very reasonable price and less than replacement.
Karp's in Upland, CA for reference.

Deduction for non-correct booster bellows. Should be gray. And date coded second quarter of '77, apparently.
Here's the Ate sticker from one of Mark's NOS 9" boosters, for reference.
