The factory rear couplers intentionally have oval holes in the two bushes to give a little play, so what you see is not abnormal. Your observation that the bushes are crumbly is also not unusual, so good choice to replace the coupler (or bushes) before they fall apart.
Here's a pic of the coupler pressed apart, showing its individual components. One of the bushes is still in place, and one has been removed to show the oval hole.

The bushes are available separately - with the oval hole or just round with no slop.

Does it have the "Do It Yourself" manual transmission, or the superior "Fully Equipped by Porsche" Automatic Transmission?

Well, I tackled the job today thankfully I have a lift to use. the front ball cup was only held in by gravity. no plastic left .. the rear was easy as the grub screw came right out. I did split the boot as it would not move at all even with heat applied . New part Not so easy going in ,, the part I ordered on E bait was Aftermarket and 5k too small for it to go on trans shaft.. PITA reaming.. Beware never again.. the front ball was another story I dropped the heat shield but not the exhaust system.. I was only able to get hold of the cup if I removed it from the shifter.. (big mistake) I managed to get it back together but I do have to rebuild the shifter linkage now..

You need to remove it from the shifter in order to get the movement necessary on the ball cup, so I don't think you did anything unnecessary.
