Default shift linkage ball socket 1985 Porsche 928

Is it possible to remove and change out the front ball socket on a 5 speed man trans. without dropping the exhaust system? I have already loosened the rear joint Grub screw and getting ready to tackle the change out , Need more advice on procedure. 1985 928 5 speed..

IIRC you will need to at the least move the heat shield, but if you can not remove the heat shield then I guess my exhaust was already off.

The old Front ball cup will come off ease enough as it's loose, I used a nylon strap over the new cup and pulled it down onto the ball as has been suggested here. It took a bit of force but it did snap in place.
Getting the lock nut tight was the hardest part for me w/ limited access with the TT in place.

There's "remove" and then there's "lower." You'll have to get it out of the way to operate and get the heat shield out. I'd think removing it would be worth it as taking it off from the manifolds is the hard part, anyways.

Did my 82 with TT and exhaust in place. Removed heat shield, cursed a lot but got it done.

I had fun doing mine! really quite simple with exhaust separated and heat shield removed.

I have the heat shield down and can get my hand on the shaft. popping it off seems pretty straight forward. I quess proper procedure would be to unhook the ball cup then remove rear coupling will the ball cup clear the TT to get the screw fitting off?

Have you looked at the PET to see the parts for this? The front rod is a separate item from the rear rod that connects to the transmission.

The front rod can be pulled to the side to access the cup. I'm not recalling all the details but you may want to separate it from the shifter lever. As putting that back together is a pain, see what you can do with it together. Note the extended length of the old cup as you'll want to match that with the new cup.

Yes. Definitely a separate part than the rear. Dave928s had a nice pic of it out of the car.

And definitely easier to get the whole cup off for when you seat the new bushing.

I did mine about a month ago. I did remove the exhaust. It was really easy once the exhaust was out of the way. While I was at it, I replace the gaskets between the manifold and the exhaust and the rubber "fasteners" that support the exhaust. (they were shot). One thing is for sure... It sure made the shifter "feel better". It actully feels like a shifter now. Was a "wet dishrag"
