I have the 12 and its been fine for everything I have thrown at it so far. The acid test may be when I rebuild the transmission in our beater pickup - which is a project I was supposed to have finished this summer....

20 ton for sure. Mine paid for itself the first time I used it. Also get the HF front wheel bearing kit.
the cherry picker can fold and not take up much room. Build a small tool room annex onto your garage.

I've been a heavy duty mechanic for thirty seven, long, years...and the press is the least used tools in our shop. And, when I sit here thinking about what I would use one for...on my 928's...only a couple things come to mind. And I don't foresee ever doing either one of those in the near future...and if I did...I'd just take the pieces somewhere and have the bearings pressed out (granted, l'd just take it to work and use the unused press at work...lol).
Me, if I was looking for something for the garage...it would be an extra 2 ton floor jack. Even though I have one, an extra one would come in handy at times. I just picked up two sets of jack stands, 6 tons, and they will be a comfort to my wife. The 3 tons are fine for a winter rest, but working below a car on them is shaky. And usually that's where the floor jack(s) come in handy, for added safety and support.
If you don't have one of these...
A good battery charger might come in handy, or a decent power washer, or a DVM (digital volt meter), or a nice heavy vise, or grinding wheel, or a buffing wheel and pads, or a bunch of hand tools to fill up your new five drawer tool box.
I agree with "dr.bob" on a lot of what he said. Most of the time you can either borrow, rent or pay for services of those big ticket tools. Especially, if you are pressed for space in your garage.
But if the question is which one, press or cherry picker...I'd go for the cherry picker. Since it can be used to unload heavy objects out of the bed of a truck or just steading a car while it's on stands.

Thanks for all the input, folks.
I went to HF to pick up the 20 ton and realized when I got there that I forgot my gift cert.
I took that as a sign that I should hold off if/when I really need the press, and follow the advise of Dr. Bob and Brian for the time being.
