That's good news J.P.

I'll keep that in mind as I might (will) eventualy have the same problem with my '91!

PM'd an obscure fix to you that just may prevent the need to replace or rebuild the brain...

There's some thread here about people baking their cruise brains as part of a "fix" which made me question the sanity of those involved, where they were posting pictures of melted components and claiming a "win"

Esoteric repair methods welcomed however - especially if it somehow takes away the need for the Bosch tile component which is the part which dies and takes the injector, fuel pump and O2 circuits with them.

Let me defend Barry here. Maybe his use of the word "obscure" wasn't the best description for a fix that worked for him.
Since his suggestion was easy and harmless, I had nothing to lose by giving it a try. Unfortunately it didn't change the state of my LH and confirmed that my LH is in fact bad. But it was certainly worth a try, & I appreciate Barry's suggestion.

In fact, beers on me for everyone who posted here b/c LH failure became the common consensus as I provided more info.

I really appreciate the wisdom and the advice that allowed me to take the shortest distance between two points in the quagmire of electrical troubleshooting.
My car never left my garage on a rollback, I didn't have to call in the experts to make a house call, and I'm going to come out of this without a serious hit to my wallet (everything's relative in that regard, and I've been budgeting for this over the past few years).
So thanks again!

I borrowed a known working LH from a real standup guy who just happened to have a spare on hand and is local. How lucky is that?
Popped it in the GT and it started right up. Considering that it wouldn't start with the original LH, but with the loaned LH popped in under the exact same conditions, it immediately started, I can't imagine it being anything other than a failed LH.
John Speake, PM sent.

I'm also going to ask the moderators to update the title to this thread. Hopefully the next RL'er who is troubleshooting a similar situation can find this thread and benefit from the post-by-post troubleshooting guide that this thread became.
I know I'm a little late JP but I say LH also. So I guess I get that FREE beer too since I posted here?!?!

Just Kiddin' JP - Great hear you got this worked out. This place is amazing and it will be great to see you again at Frenzy!

Thanks JP for being a standup guy!

Yes, the simple fix did work on the Cassisrot S4 that was recently for sale... it cured the bad, hunting & surging idle... in 5 minutes tops. Guy that got the car didn't have to turn a single wrench (I did... but what are friends for?).

...and I'm sure that 928 pros will charge at least an hour of labor for that same 5-minute fix -and then brag that they were able to save the computer!

I have been following this thread and am very happy that you know how to resolve your issue.

What I don't see is a description of the '5 minute fix' attempt. Did I miss it? Or do you have to do some sort of special handshake or fraternity initiation to hear about it?

J.P. - Glad you got to the bottom of this problem. I have wondered for a long time what to expect when the LH goes on my 88. After the first page I decided to subscribe to this thread...definitely a keeper.

Thanks for your help getting the Fun Run maps up on the Frenzy site. I didn't know you were dealing with this at the same time.

I decided to have the GT's original LH rebuilt by John. Call me persnickety, but I feel better about keeping the original brain..
Last time I checked on the shipment, it was at Heathrow. Probably in customs.

Thanks to a very gracious gesture on the part of a literally close friend, who loaned me his 'spare' LH, my GT will be driveable to Frenzy!

Thumbs up UPDATE

Got my original* LH back from JDS Porsche. Well packed and properly shipped. Immediate turnaround on John's end and great communication during the process. I had a ton of questions that were answered in detail. Thanks John!
It turned out that this particular LH had some uncommon qualities about it - like unique labels - including a serial number. Maybe it was a test unit for new GTS programming that somehow made it into my GT. Regardless, it's the original 'brain' to my car and I'm glad that I didn't swap it out for an off-the-shelf unit.

*Since this GT came from the original owner with all documentation, no reported start issues beyond a dead battery and no hefty repair bills suggesting a dealer-installed LH, I'm confident that the LH that I had rebuilt is the original factory unit.

Installed it and my GT started right up

JP,

Great stuff!

Do I get any bragging rights as first to mention the LH in post No3?

Rgds

Fred
