Default Winter Project List

The weather here in Chicago is starting to cool, which is a (premature) sign that Fall & Winter are around the corner.

As I have no plans of taking the car out in the snow, I'm starting to think ahead to the projects that will keep me busy over the grey, slushy, salty, snowy winter.

I can't pull the engine do to lack of workspace (the better half won't be happy about needing to park her car in the driveway while her side of the garage is filled with assorted parts), so I'm somewhat limited in what I can do. But, here's my current list:
  • Fix fried wires under dash (already have wires from EagleDay)
  • Brake Fluid Flush
  • PS Hose Replacement, per Dwayne's great write-up (mine is leaky)
  • PS Motor Seal R&R
  • Rear Half Axle R&R (PO did DS, I'm going to do PS)

The PO did WP/TB before I got the car, so that's out of the way.

Anything else I should consider or you'd recommend. I will not have a lack of time, so that's not an issue.

Hi Ryan
There is no limit. Safety items should probably come first.
Replace fuel lines unless new. Verify ball joints are steel.
Non safety consider motor mounts, oil pan gasket, evaluate shocks.
Just some ideas.
Good luck
Dave

Thanks for the ideas, Dave.

OPG and fuel lines were replaced by P.O., MMs are a bit out of my price range atm ($220+ each for solid) and ball joints are steel.

Good idea on shocks. On the list they go.

MM are 110.00 for the pair from Roger...do the pan gasket at the same time.

Not for the pre-83 motor mounts. They are $200+ each.

Flush the clutch out when you do the brakes. I had great success doing it from the bleeders with a Mity-Vac, vs the pressure way (I was scared to death of over-pressurizing and blowing off the blue hose).

Electrical - Clean all the grounds. Do the CE panel (sharkskin has a great writeup on it). Plugs and connectors, although if they are "crumbly" you might do more harm than good. Invest in a couple cans of DeOxIt. I like to do all the light bulb sockets too.

Clean the interior. Really well. Take out the seats and everything. While you have the seats out, you may want to go underneath them and clean up the "movement" mechanisms. The "up & down" are pretty well protected, the recline is buried in the seat back, but the "forward & back" part is a dirt magnet.

Hi Itoolio!!!!

This is exactly what I need to be doing as well, making a list....
What about your instrument pod? All bulbs ok? Gauges work?

Also they usually run a huge holiday 50% discount on used parts from 928ITL right around Christmas...
hint hint hint

Ah yes. Forgot about the CE Panel cleaning. Great suggestion. Ditto Clutch Flush and seat mechanism.

I've gone through about 3 cans of Deoxit in my cleaning up to this point, but you bring up a few areas that I didn't consider.

All gauges work, but fuel reads low. Good fix idea.

Thanks for the great ideas!

Shocks- see Roger's sale thread- good idea!
Clutch and brake fluid flush are good suggestion.
Clean/inspect connections on all grounds of course.
if you want to, go ahead and delve into the HVAC, esp the blower resistor pack.
Heater valve, hose and vac lines.
I've had 3 928s, model years 83-86.5. Its been a fault on all.
If your car is manual- you have older synchros, do trans/diff service with optimal trans fluid (though I'll refrain from speculating what that might be).
Close inspect of tie rods/rack/bearings for play.
Does your cruise control work? pulled mine and ebay rebuild has been rock solid.
Could switch brake hoses to stainless lines, though that could be squandered $$.
Address aggravation, if any, with window rattles(when partially lowered), sunroof alignment (if applicable), hatch leaks (if applicable). Consider refreshing hatch latch parts.

Alright I'm probably straying...best bet-- though I don't recall an OB...is to look up one of MrMerlins'/Stan's complete refresh threads, and Worf/Dave Chamberlain's PPI list.

Thanks, SMT. Good stuff there. Some I have done, some I have not, so more good stuff to go on the list.

One of Stan's Refresh Threads is here and will use that as an X-Ref. Will look for some others as well.

Another little thing to do is if not already done, make sure your battery is vented. Acidic vapor not good, especially for the well being of your wires/cable/strap.

Welcome.
I know I'm forgetting tractor loads of stuff...

OH yeah, and if you have a fan clutch, and haven't recharged the fluid- do that. Better now than the midst of summer.

BTW, pass side axle is close to a piece i' cake.

Check exhaust hangers for rubber erosion and trans mounts if any vibes. Can always install a jaeger speed mount for extra dampening if motor mounts are border line but not on the tick list due to time, cost or degree of degradation.

If you have the front spoiler and your car is still somewhat of a driver ie might see some less than perfect roads/parking lots, the 928MS protector plates are great IMO.

Your windshield and headlight washers functioning?]
Could selectively add some sound dampening- doors, floor...

Got x pipe? with cats, of course. :-)

R&R injectors and send for flush/flow calibration?

Anyone ever been into the parking break assembly to clean/lube/adjust?

Fuel filter R&R, always good esp if storing and/or using solvents.

An OCD type might pull the rear spoiler to clean away debris and insure against future corrosion..

Aw, heck I gottagetridathisthing....

I had great, but subtle results replacing (+) battery cable on my '83, but that is extremely elective.

Excellent suggestion on the Battery, WJ. Need to check that out.

SMT:
- Not sure if I have a Fan Clutch. Need to look into that.
- The Speedmounts only show as being for an '83+.
- Like the Exhaust Hanger and Trans Mount idea. Need to check them out.
- Ditto the washers. I have a leak somewhere in the system, so will work on that.
- Will probably do the parking brake R&R, as the entire system is currently loose due to a broken mounting bolt on the rear axle.
- Have a fuel filter on the shelf, so will probably look into that.
- Already did sound dampening
- Was already thinking about getting the injectors off to Witchhunter, so might as well add that to the list.

My rear light assemblies don't seem to fit flush, so I might aspire to do that.

Man...didn't think the list would get this big. A case of "Better be careful what you ask for".

Thanks again for all the input, guys.

Hi Ryan,
No fan clutch due to supercharger. Many other good suggestions. R & R of injectors is not without risk, and they are expensive to replace if they break. I elected not to do so.
Good luck,
Dave
