I've started pulling more of the interior out to be reupholstered for my '82 instead of recovering the '82 parts which are still in good condition but don't match where I'm taking the interior.
Some day I will pull the engine and transmission. I may rebuild the heads for my US '84 but that car already has a long list of things that need to be done to get it back onto the road.
Is anyone looking for a Euro power train? Hahaha...
So I finally got around to checking the numbers on the engine and transmission. I couldn't for the life of me find any markings on the transmission but I did find a almost rotted out sticker that had a partial VIN which read WP0JB0924J...
The engine was nice and clear: M28/11 82D0645.
Can anyone comment on what I have here? Is it anything special?
What do you think about the VIN tag on the bottom of the transmission not matching the car? Is that normal? Or do I have a US version car here that has had the VIN tag removed and replaced with a Euro VIN and an engine transplant?
M28.11 block is from EUro 300hp 928S (4.7L CIS engine - from 80-83).
Whether it has the right heads/cams/intake is unknown (the intake runners on the 300hp engine look different to the early ones).
The serial number and markings for the transmission are on the bottom edge at the back of the trans, just under the back plate. To see them you'll need to be looking up at it from below.
The VIN sticker you found on the trans doesn't match the engine type (engine type was never sold with a US VIN), but at this stage you do't know where it came from. Possible its from a swapped in trans after the original developed the usual crunchy syncros.
No, it has a sunroof. The build sheet from 928OC shows the M650 sliding roof option. Where did you pull your information from?
If the 928OC build sheet disagrees with Dave, then one of them has the wrong VIN number, as they both use the same data source (PET data).
If its a US model car, the VIN tag in the edge of the windshield is the correct one. If its a "euro" there should be an aluminium plate riveted in front below the headlight bar.
Both US and Euro series have a WP0ZZZ style VIN on the front right fender edge jus tunder the hood shutline - altho' it does have the digit after the '8' as an indicator of US vs Euro. If the fender VIN is WP0ZZZ92ZDS84xxxx its a Euro, if its WP0ZZZ92ZDS86xxxx its a US model. However there are other giveaways to US model cars like the exhaust, side marker lights, rear bumperettes and more.
You car has a Euro engine, but a US body, which says to me its a US model car with an engine swap. Or its a rebirthed car which used to be a euro and got crashed so badly they used a US tub and transferred the VIN and running gear to it.
