Default Preparation

The original letters have partially flaked off leaving some uneveness. If I treat this like house I paint and just scrape off the loose material, I will have some of the original left. Is the remaining surface smooth enough to be REALLY "not noticable" when the fresh letter is in place? My car will never be concourse, (wait - I haven't checked the lottery ticket, I'll get back to you) but this is one of the areas that gets attention and if I can make it perfect, I will.

FYI

I have heard that you can lightly mist the area with water before applying. This allows one to make corrections if needed and supposedly, won't affect adhesion. As Pat said above, an Exacto knife works well with the decal stuck on the tip to apply. Then, work out any water under the decal with a soft towel. May be a good idea to check with the vendor before misting to confirm there are no adhesion issues.

NO! What ever you do, don't do that. If you leave any of the remaining old decal, it will show through the new decal horribly!

Try using some lighter fluid and a mild abrasive on the head of a Q-tip to remove as much of the old decal as possible.

Steve:

Remove as much material as you can. Go to the hardware store and pick up a can of GOOF OFF. It works fantastic.

Similar to Don's suggestion - I remember reading somewhere that a mixture of water and dishwash detergent sprayed lightly allows you to move and slide the decal into place. Once it dries the decal should be perfect. I just can't remember where I saw that suggestion.

We used to use a similar mixture of water and dishwashing detergent when applying both large and small decals. A lot like installing window tint go slowly carefully and remove all bubbles before proceeding to the next one. Also be sure to use a paint safe wax remover as a final cleaning step prior to installation.

Dude, isn't that stuff just lighter fluid in a yellow can with red letter instead of blue?

Pat:

GOOF OFF is not lighter fluid.

Goof off works much like lighter fluid, and I would recommend Ronson lighter fluid as it works well too.

Above Link information

How to fit your decal and get the best results:

All screen decals must be placed on the inside unless stated otherwise.

The Porsche 928 rear letters need to be fitted one letter at a time.

Fit the decal in a warm enviroment.

Clean the surface where the decal is to be fitted thoroughly with Windex or alcohol (ensure that the cleaner doesnt damage paintwork. it is important that there is no wax or grease on the surface)

Place the decal on the surface and hold in place with a piece of masking tape on one edge so that you can still lift the decal from the surface

Carefully peel off the backing that is next to the surface that the decal is to be applied to

Spray a mixture of soap and water or Windex on the area the decal is to be applied this will help stop air bubbles and allow you to position the decal accurately

Lay the decal onto the surface, slide it into the position you require it and with a credit card, starting at the middle work out all the liquid

Leave to dry for 15 to 30 minutes

Carefully remove the masking tape and the decal backing ensuring the decal does not come off with the backing. Do this slowly.

Do not wash the arear vigourosly for a couple of weeks

To remove a decal:

Use a heat gun to warm the decal and peel it off gently

To remove any additional glue use rubbing alcohol or similar compound (ensure that this does not mark the paintwork)

Unhappy Outstanding decal order

Shane, I have an outstanding order with these guys that I placed about the same time as yours. They claim to have shipped mine now for the third time.
I hope we're not seeing a trend established.
